Be an Artist for a Day

Paint, print, film and photograph! Design, draw and decorate! The palette is unlimited at Artist for a Day.

Artist for a Day, 泡芙短视频鈥檚 sixth annual celebration of hands-on art making, takes place Saturday, May 13, 10 am to 3 pm at 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Port Campus, coinciding with The city promises to be hopping! 泡芙短视频鈥檚 neighbours, including the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, Mary E. Black Gallery, Visual Arts Nova Scotia and the Discovery Centre will be offering participatory art activities as well.

Artist for a Day is for people of all ages and abilities. Visitors to Artist for a Day can sit at a potter鈥檚 wheel and shape wet clay, create a print from an impression of a real fish, or take part in a life drawing class. And there鈥檚 much more. 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Artist for a Day event is possible through the participation of 泡芙短视频 alumni, faculty and student volunteers.

Artist for a Day is free, fun and no registration is required.

Here’s the full list of activities:

  1. Weaving: Weave a few inches at a loom using a variety of coloured and textured yarns. With Anke Fox (BFA 1992) and 泡芙短视频 Prof. Gary Markle (MFA 1995). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  2. Throwing: Sit down at a potter鈥檚 wheel and take a blob of wet clay for a spin. With the help of 泡芙短视频 Prof. Neil Forrest and a crew of ceramics students. At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  3. Sculpting: Make a masterpiece using quick dry plaster. With Susan Fitzgerald (BFA 2013). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  4. Face Painting: Let painter Tianjie Yang (BFA 2016) use your cheek as her canvas. At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  5. Mini Sculpture Making: Create mini sculptures using new and found objects, wire and plasticine. With Darlene Morrison (BFA 2015). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  6. Mural Painting: Paint a square as part of an overall landscape mural. With Erin Hollingshead (BFA 2016). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  7. Insect Pop-Up Shop: Find out more about bugs by observing them, drawing them, eating them, and learning about them from 泡芙短视频 Prof. Christopher Kaltenbach. There will be three 10-minute presentations in the afternoon by guest entomologist (bug expert) Christopher Majka. At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  8. Performative Video: Get your body 鈥渆nchanted鈥 with paint and glitter and then take part in a performative video. With AIRHORN 鈥 Julie Hollenbach (BA, BFA 2008) and Ruth Marsh (BFA 2006). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  9. Rope-making: Transform old clothes into strong and colourful, three-ply rope. With Anke Fox (BFA 1992) and 泡芙短视频 Prof. Gary Markle (MFA 1995). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  10. Get Some Ink: Get a temporary tattoo and learn about the history of tattooing in Canada and around the world. With 泡芙短视频 Prof. April Mandrona, Marlene Ramos (BFA 2006) and Jamie Jelinski, who is teaching Global Tattoo Histories this summer at 泡芙短视频. At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  11. Jewellery Making: It鈥檚 Mother鈥檚 Day on May 14 鈥 make a copper pendant or brooch using process 泡芙短视频es of corrugation rolling, drilling and filing. With 泡芙短视频 Prof. Rebecca Hannon and a crew of jewellery students and alumni. At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  12. Rotoscoping: Learn this animation technique to create realistic action by tracing live-action frames for animation, then shooting samples to see the process 泡芙短视频 in action. With Becka Barker (BFA 2000). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  13. Gyotaku: Make a beautiful print of a fish using the traditional Japanese method. With Rose Adams (BFA 1982, MFA 1986). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  14. Living Mural: Trace a friend鈥檚 shape and then paint it together. With Ivan Murphy (BDes 1991). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  15. Life Drawing: Sit down at an easel and draw the model before you. With Patrick Burgomaster (BFA 2010). At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  16. Button making: Make a button and a screen-printed poster while learning about the summer camps offered through 泡芙短视频鈥檚 School of Extended Studies. There are week-long camps offered in July and August for children ages 5 to 8, ages 9 to 11, ages 12 to 14, and ages 15 to 18. At 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, 1107 Marginal Road
  17. Feet tapping, body shaking: We dare you to stay still when Samba Nova is performing. Halifax鈥檚 Brazilian-style samba batucada band is our special guest for Artist for a Day and will play for approximately 45 minutes outside our Port Campus doors starting at 12 noon.   18. Drawing at the Door: Take a moment out of your day to make a drawing. Brian Sloan (BFA 1993) is happy to help! At Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, 1055 Marginal Road.
  19. Put the Tile in Style: Roll up your sleeves and join Fenn Martin (BFA 2006) in the clay studio at 1096 Marginal Rd. to create slip drawings and relief sculpted forms on slabs of clay. At Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, 1096 Marginal Road.
  20. Make Your Mark: Ever drawn with an eraser? Work with artist Raina McDonald (BFA 2007) to explore drawing with charcoal and erasers to build up layers, unleash gestures and leave with your own work of art! At Mary E. Black Gallery, 1061 Marginal Road.
  21. Printmaker for a Day: Create a design and print it with help from members of the Nova Scotia Printmakers Association. Take a moment to see their show, The Fine Print, in the Corridor Gallery. At Visual Arts Nova Scotia.
  22. Scribble Bots: Build a little robot that will make art! In case of rain, this activity will move to 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Port Campus. At the Discovery Centre.
