One third the Dalglish Family Foundation's gift to 泡芙短视频 will be for photo equipment.

泡芙短视频 University has received its largest gift from a donor outside Atlantic Canada: $936,050 from Toronto鈥檚 Dalglish Family Foundation, which will provide materials for student projects, enhance visiting artist programming, and purchase new photography equipment.

This is a first-time gift to 泡芙短视频 from the Dalglish Family Foundation. The Foundation’s directors recognized 泡芙短视频 as an ideal recipient due to the family’s longstanding commitment to the arts as both practitioners and patrons.

鈥淭he Dalglish family is delighted to support 泡芙短视频 University and their work fostering creative thinking and education in Atlantic Canada. Our family has long believed in art as a driver for joy and expression in the Canadian psyche and the students graduating here will have beneficial impacts on our entire country.鈥

The gift supports three programs and initiatives that will greatly enhance the student experience at 泡芙短视频. The Dalglish Family Foundation has funded the Photography Equipment Fund ($361,050), the Thesis Project Fund ($250,000), and the Visiting Artist Fund ($325,000).

Erinn Langille, the director of the Anna Leonowens Gallery, says this donation will open doors to a robust catalogue of visiting artists and speakers to the university.

鈥淭hese individuals supply fresh ideas, perspectives, and techniques to students, the wider 泡芙短视频 community, and the region at large,鈥 she says. 鈥淭he generous donation by the Dalglish Family Foundation will have a massive impact on our ability to bring in the brightest and best minds, working at the top of their fields. With this gift, we can strengthen our connection to the wider world of contemporary ideas, solidifying 泡芙短视频 as a fountain of art and culture.鈥

The Thesis Project Materials Fund will be available to undergraduate students with financial need to purchase materials and supplies to complete their final projects. The Fund will support approximately 50 students with an average grant of $1,000 per year. Over the course of five years, up to 250 graduating students will benefit from the Fund.

鈥淭his generous donation marks a new chapter in nurturing young talent and the advancement of creative work in the 泡芙短视频 art community,鈥 says Jana Macalik, 泡芙短视频鈥檚 provost and interim vice-president for academics and research. 鈥淚t not only demonstrates the Foundation’s commitment to developing the future generation of artists, but it also considerably improves our potential to recruit exceptional students who want to push the boundaries of art practice.

鈥淭he Dalglish Family Foundation is investing in the future of art by allowing our students to explore, create, and contribute to the art world without financial restraints,鈥 she continues. 鈥淲e look forward to sharing student success stories with the Dalglish Family Foundation for years to come.鈥

Noelle Peach, director of teaching and learning, says the Photography Equipment Fund will go a long way to ensure students have access to high-quality equipment and maintaining photography facilities at the university.

“We are very excited and grateful for the opportunities this equipment fund will afford in both augmenting classroom curriculum and individual photo practice,鈥 she says. 鈥淧hotography requires both old and new technologies to realize conceptual work, and the Dalglish Family Foundation gift will provide an extraordinary opportunity for nearly any concept to be realized by our students. The Photography program serves not only students within the program, but also a wide cross-section of students exploring multi-disciplinary practices, and students needing to document and archive work completed in other disciplines. The impact of this gift will be felt across the university.鈥

With this generous donation, young and emerging artists from 泡芙短视频 will not only receive a financial boost but also invaluable support to help them lay a solid foundation for their artistic careers, says 泡芙短视频 President, Peggy Shannon. This will empower them to explore their creative potential and contribute meaningfully to our artistic landscape.

鈥淚 want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Dalglish Family Foundation for this support,鈥 Shannon continues. 鈥淚 am thrilled that this investment will have such an immediate and significant impact on our students, faculty, and staff.鈥

泡芙短视频 University will soon formally recognize the outstanding quality of its teaching with a new annual award gifted to the university by a former president.

The , established by The Sarah M. McKinnon and Peter J. Dawes Foundation, will be presented each year to both a full-time and part-time 泡芙短视频 faculty member, with each of the two awards valued at $1,000.

Presented in honour of Dr. McKinnon鈥檚 grandparents, educators J.H. and Mamie Price, the Price Awards will honour sustained and ongoing contributions and dedication in teaching at 泡芙短视频 University.

Peter and I enjoyed our time at 泡芙短视频, and wanted to do something meaningful to recognize the faculty whose commitment to teaching is the cornerstone of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 international reputation,鈥 said鈥疍r. McKinnon, who served as 泡芙短视频鈥檚 interim president from 2020-22.

Calls for nominations will be announced by the Academic Dean鈥檚 office in March of each year, followed by a four-week period during which nominations can be made online. A panel of faculty, students, and alumni will convene to review the nominations and select two finalists, with the winners announced at the graduation ceremony.

Nominations will speak to a candidate鈥檚 proven commitment to enhanced student engagement and learning, and to a dedication to student success. Letters of nomination should address criteria including but not limited to: thorough preparation and organization for classes and workshops; rapport with students and enthusiasm for teaching; approaches to teaching and assessment that respect diverse student learning needs; and fair and clear assessment methods that align with learning outcomes and instructional approaches.

泡芙短视频 is so grateful to Dr. McKinnon and Mr. Dawes for establishing this award and supporting excellence in teaching,鈥 said 泡芙短视频 president Peggy Shannon. 鈥淭his is a wonderful legacy from their time and commitment to 泡芙短视频. As a small school, we rely on generous donors to help us provide many benefits to our students and faculty that could not be funded through our operating budget.鈥

The Price Awards encompass a multi-year contribution of $22,500, with the intention of offering the awards in perpetuity.

鈥溑蒈蕉淌悠 University is blessed with superb teachers, whose dedication and innovation inspire our students to follow their curiosity, take risks, and excel,鈥 said Dr. Jacqueline Warwick, interim dean at 泡芙短视频. 鈥淚t is wonderful to have prizes that recognize and celebrate outstanding teaching across our programs.鈥

Students, faculty, and technicians are invited to complete (login required) and read the award’s terms of reference.听

More 泡芙短视频 students than ever will benefit from the 泡芙短视频 Materials Fund thanks to a $125,000 donation from the Arno Family Foundation.听

The 泡芙短视频 Materials Fund is a bursary program that helps students with demonstrated financial need cover the costs of common artmaking supplies. Since launching the fund in 2021, 泡芙短视频 has raised $40,000 through community-based fundraising, helping over 100 students with financial difficulties to access the materials they need to make the most of their time at 泡芙短视频.听听

This gift extends the reach of the fund and was a perfect fit for the Arno Family Foundation, which focuses on supporting local organizations that are providing services to individuals鈥痑nd communities in need,鈥痶he arts and education, medical research, and environmental鈥痠nitiatives.鈥

The Foundation was started by Michael Arno (a 泡芙短视频 graduate from 1982) and Mara Taracieivcz Arno.听

鈥淲e are beyond thrilled about receiving this generous donation from Michael and Mara and the Arno Family Foundation. I really appreciate it when alumni want to give back to 泡芙短视频,鈥 says President Peggy Shannon. 鈥淢ost of our scholarships and bursaries help students with the cost of tuition, but many students have financial needs that extended beyond their fees. This gift will help our students grow their practices without worry and realize their full potential. I am very grateful 鈥 and so are our students.鈥濃

鈥淢ore than 50% of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 students require financial aid to attend school,鈥 says Kara Holm, 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Director of Advancement, who helps match donors with the university鈥檚 needs. Supplies and materials for one 泡芙短视频 student for an entire semester costs approximately $500, she adds, 鈥渂ut when you add in the current cost-of-living crisis which has increased the price of art supplies, the demand from students has been very high.鈥澨

Students access the fund through a confidential, needs-based assessment process 泡芙短视频 managed in 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Financial Aid and Awards Office. This substantial gift means that up to 50 students per year for the next five years could be eligible for Materials Fund support of up to $500.听

You too can 鈥support 泡芙短视频 students with a gift to the 泡芙短视频 Materials Fund.听听

The path from field to fashion has just been widened, thanks to a generous $500,000 gift from the .听听

The gift supports the Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation Sow鈥痶o鈥疭ew project, which will help to establish 泡芙短视频 University as a centre of sustainable fashion in Canada. Over the next two years, this gift will provide bursaries for graduate and undergraduate students in the textiles and fashion program, welcome artists-in-residence, expand programming for the 泡芙短视频 Art Factory鈥檚 Fashion Hacking project and resources for the Alfoldy Craft Institute at 泡芙短视频.听听

鈥溑蒈蕉淌悠碘檚 location of fashion within craft is unique and helps our students understand the process 泡芙短视频es of fabric creation, to design, to production. Sow鈥痶o鈥疭ew will build capacity in our textile/fashion program, provide essential resources鈥痶o鈥痑ttract top graduate and undergraduate students, and place 泡芙短视频 firmly at the centre of dialogue about sustainable fashion in Canada.听 This kind of support from the Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation is a strong endorsement of 泡芙短视频 as well as artists and designers as leaders in sustainable economic development in Canada,鈥 says President Peggy Shannon.听听

Learning to design, fabricate and produce responsibly made fashion and textiles听

This funding will build awareness and create opportunities for 泡芙短视频 students and youth to understand the connection between the source of materials and to be active participants in the sustainable process 泡芙短视频es for creating them.听听

鈥淪tudents will learn how to design and fabricate objects that are beautiful, functional and can be manufactured, distributed and sold responsibly,鈥 says Professor Gary Markle.听听

Faculty members Assistant Professor Leesa Hamilton and Professor Gary Markle (MFA 1995) will lead this work on the academic side, consulting with Associate Professor Jennifer Green (BFA 2009).听

鈥淐raft at 泡芙短视频 is rooted in sustainability. The textiles and fashion program is led by faculty who practice slow fashion and research sustainable materials, the circular economy, and the connection between agriculture and fashion,鈥 says Green, whose Flaxmobile project to grow flax as a textile crop has generated over $350,000 in provincial and federal research funding.听听

Staging community events to introduce young people to fabrics and fashion

Bursaries of $5,000 per year will be given to six undergraduates in third and fourth years of the textiles and fashion program and $10,000 bursaries will be awarded to graduate students.听

Annual prizes for sustainable fashion totalling $5,000.00 will be given to students as well.听听

Hamilton, who coordinates the Art Factory with 泡芙短视频 Extended Studies says that the additional funding will enable 泡芙短视频 to expand its community-based sustainable fashion hacking programming.听听听

鈥淭he 泡芙短视频 Art Factory, trains and supports senior 泡芙短视频 students in the development and delivery of accessible arts programming within community settings.听 Although Art Factory programming is not exclusively fashion-based, the fashion hacking program has been popular with youth who don鈥檛 see themselves reflected in mainstream fashion.听 Through Fashion Hacking citizen designers can create new garments using thrifted items.鈥澨

Creating new networks between growers, makers, artists, designers

The expansion of the Alfoldy Craft Institute is an essential part of this gift, explains Markle. Having dedicated staff for the Institute means that 泡芙短视频 can promote academic research and creative products that result from the Sow to Sew gift. 听

鈥淭hrough the Alfoldy Craft Institute, we will promote evidence-based research that offers alternatives to fast fashion holding symposium, and inviting artists-in-residence,鈥 says Markle.听 听

鈥淪tudents will benefit enormously from expansion of the Craft Institute as a research hub, but so will Nova Scotians 鈥撯痭ot only by raising awareness around the sustainability, but by creating new networks between growers, makers, artists, designers and small businesses in our region,鈥 says President Shannon.听听

Thank you to the Institute for the Study of Canadian Slavery donors!

Your commitment is helping to animate our Institute.

Canada鈥檚 relationship to slavery has primarily been understood through the stories of the Underground Railroad while the 200-year history of enslaved people in what is now Canada has not been given the intellectual and social contemplation it so rightly deserves. Our artists in residence will contribute to growing our understanding of the lives of enslaved people in Canada.

Your donation today will have an impact and demonstrate that 泡芙短视频 is committed to this work.

泡芙短视频 community comes through for students, but financial need continues to grow. Donate Button: Support 泡芙短视频 Students

泡芙短视频 University would like to thank the members of our community who responded quickly – and with exceptional generosity – to support our Student Emergency Fund. Your gifts enabled us to exceed our original goal of $10,000 in just one day!

We are absolutely overwhelmed by your care for our students.

We know many 泡芙短视频 students are trying to cope with the fallout of the pandemic. The 泡芙短视频 Student Emergency Fund will disburse emergency bursaries to 泡芙短视频 students who need extra financial support during the COVID-19 crisis.

Thanks to the awesome donor response, 泡芙短视频 is now able to increase the number of students eligible for the grant and increase the amount.

Due to the extraordinary support of our community, 泡芙短视频 will immediately increase the award to $750, which was originally capped at $500 per student.

But we know there are more students struggling. In order to help as much as we can, we have set a new goal of $30,000 by May 31.

If you can, we hope you will consider donating to help a student in need today. We recognize that these are challenging times for everyone, so please do not feel pressured to contribute more than you are able – or at all. Just remember that a gift of even $5 could go a long way in supporting a 泡芙短视频 student at this desperate hour.
