Honorary Degree Committee Call for Nominations for 2022 RecipientsDoctor of Fine Arts (honoris causa) and Life Fellow
Closing date: Friday, April 16, 2021

ܽƵ’s Honorary Degree Committee is charged with selecting individuals, for conferral of the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts (honoris causa) and the new appointment of Life Fellow. To this end, the committee seeks nominations for individuals from the ܽƵ communit.

Doctor of Fine Arts (honoris causa)

Dr. Rebecca Belmore, Doctor of Fine Arts (honoris causa) 2019

By awarding honorary degrees, ܽƵ University seeks to recognize extraordinary achievement, in Canada or abroad, in community, national or international involvement, and to honour those individuals whose accomplishments are of such generally perceived excellence that they provide, through example, inspiration and leadership to the graduates of the University. Their esteem should be such that, by virtue of accepting an honorary degree, their presence will bring honour and distinction to ܽƵ University.

Extraordinary achievement worthy of an honorary doctoral degree is excellence or achievement in creating something important and new – new knowledge, a new value, a new perspective, a new capability, a new appreciation, a new event or a new object.

The committee defines as broad a range of categories for achievement as possible in obtaining and considering nominations. In determining the leaders and exemplars to honour, it will seek over time to achieve a balance across disciplines and backgrounds. The committee also considers the association nominees may have with ܽƵ University or with higher education more broadly. The committee also attempts to reflect the national character of Canada, the desirable features of its regional and cultural diversity, and the character and diversity of the university itself. As such, it is necessary for the committee to have a diverse pool of candidates so that it may consider diversity in all of its dimensions.

The role of the committee is to review and select outstanding candidates for honorary degrees across a range of academic disciplines and non‐ academic areas of achievement. The committee will seek nominations of candidates who have demonstrated:

  1. Inspirational leadership in, or service to, society;
  2. Outstanding contributions to, or leadership in, a field or discipline of study or a non‐academic area of achievement; or
  3. Significant pattern of outstanding achievement at, or contributions to, ܽƵ University.
Particular consideration will be given to those candidates whose contributions or leadership have not yet been widely recognized, but which merit such recognition. Every effort will be made to select candidates who are reflective of the diversity of the university community and of Canadian society. The following persons are not eligible for consideration for an honorary degree: current members of the faculty, staff, the Board of Governors, or their immediate families. Such members may not be considered for nomination until a minimum of one year has passed since their active connection with the university has ended; Current students; Individuals who are active in any level of Canadian political life, although exceptions may be made for Governors General or Lieutenant‐Governors, judges and others whose appointments place them outside active partisan politics.

Nominators should ensure that their nomination letter and supporting materials provide reasons for the nomination that are as complete as possible. They should cite the pre‐eminence of the individual nominee in their respective field, and/or achievements and accomplishments of an outstanding nature. If submitting multiple nominations, they are encouraged to provide a ranking for those nominations. This will both assist the committee in their deliberations and may reduce the amount of supplementary information requested by the committee. It is important to note that submissions will be accepted at any time during the year, though only those received by the annual deadline will be considered for that year’s nomination cycle. Nominations may be submitted at any time to the Office of University Relations attention Chris McFarlane. All nominees must meet the ethical standards of the university, have no conflicts of interest, and subscribe to the standards of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.Life Fellow

By appointing an individual as a Life Fellow, ܽƵ University seeks to recognize former faculty, staff, alumni and other individuals who have made significant, long term contributions to the life and development of the university. The recognition is seen as an appropriate way in which to honour persons who might not be nominated for an Honorary Degree.

The following persons are not eligible for consideration for appointment as a Life Fellow: current members of the faculty, staff, the Board of Governors, or their immediate families; current students; individuals who are active in any level of Canadian political life, although exceptions may be made for Governors General or Lieutenant‐Governors, judges and others whose appointments place them outside active partisan politics.

Nominators should ensure that their nomination letter and supporting materials provide reasons for the nomination and are as complete as possible. They should cite the significant, long term contributions to the life and development of the university by the nominee.

To assure the confidentiality of the process ܽƵ, nominators shall keep the nomination confidential from the nominee. Do not initiate a letterwriting campaign to support nomination; doing so will not influence the outcome.

Closing date: Friday, April 16, 2021

Please send all nomination documentation in electronic format to:

Dear students,
Our Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner, and traditionally it would be a time to gather with family and friends to celebrate and feast together.

Many students at ܽƵ and other post secondary schools would normally travel outside of Nova Scotia for the long weekend. We must now think of Thanksgiving and all holiday plans within the priority of working together to prevent spreading COVID-19 as the pandemic’s second wave is well underway in Canada’s hardest-hit provinces.

When the start of the Fall semester raised concerns about out-of-province university students bringing COVID-19 into to Nova Scotia, you and your peers across the province responsibly followed public health directives to help keep the pandemic at bay and our communities safe. We have some of the lowest infection rates in the world thanks in part to your commitment to following the rules.

The few new cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia have all been related to travel and have been contained by province’s self-isolation requirement for anyone coming from outside of the Atlantic Bubble. I ask you now to think about the risks of travelling out of province for any reason as many places in Canada are seeing a dramatic spike in new cases per day.

Choosing to not travel will help prevent new outbreaks, allow us to maintain the relaxed restrictions we currently have, and avoid the 14-day self-isolation required of anyone returning to the province after leaving the Atlantic Bubble. You can also take advantage of some great local and the surrounding area, and indulge in the renowned beauty of .

As always, I strongly encourage you to maintain the behaviours for safety outlined in our , follow NS Public Health’s , and also suggest that you consider downloading Canada’s that lets users know if they may have been exposed to COVID-19. It is available for free download on theand on.

If you have any questions abut travelling out of province for Thanksgiving or any other time during the semester, please contact the Office of Student Experience at ose@nscad.ca.

Wishing you a relaxing and safe holiday,

Dr. Ann-Barbara Graff

Vice-President (Academic & Research) and Provost

Darrell Varga made a lasting impression at the 2020 FIN Atlantic International Film Festival.
Darrell Varga.
Darrell Varga.

Varga, an Associate Professor of Art History and Contemporary Culture at ܽƵ University, won Best Atlantic Documentary for Bread in the Bones. Varga created, directed, and produced the documentary that looks at the cultural impact of bread through the eyes of poets, artists, historians, and bread scholars.

“Bread is central to the story of human civilization—it’s in our bones. This humble food made of flour, water, salt and yeast not only provides nourishment for the body, it also feeds our collective desire for a connection to culture and community,” said Varga. “Through the simplicity and universality of bread, I wanted to tell the complex stories of love and loss, work and pleasure, poetry and politics, art and immigration.”

Bread in the Bones takes viewers on an exploratory journey – from Coney Island and rural Vermont to France, Germany, Bulgaria and beyond – to discover stories where bread is always at the centre.

In the documentary, Varga shows us how bread has been essential to of human life and creativity for at least the last 10,000 years, and is the vehicle through which we explore stories of life and death, immigration and refugees, social justice and the counter-culture, and of art, poetry, work and pleasure.

“Love it or hate it, everyone has a relationship with bread,” Varga added. “It’s a witness to history.”

Bread in the Bones takes viewers on an exploratory journey – from Coney Island and rural Vermont to France, Germany, Bulgaria and beyond.

Varga worked on the documentary for seven years, including travel to various parts of the world for research and footage. He saw firsthand how engrained the making and consuming of bread is in the day-to-day lives of people from all kinds of backgrounds and locales. He dedicated the documentary to the late Sandra Alfoldy, a renowned craft historian and beloved ܽƵ professor, and an interview with Alfoldy is included in the film.

Varga teaches film history and documentary filmmaking at ܽƵ, and has been published broadly on all topics related to Canadian cinema. He recently published Shooting From the East: Filmmaking on the Canadian Atlantic, from McGill-Queen’s University Press.

His films include Hunters and Gatherers, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1994, Working Days for TVOntario and the essay film Fire, Ice and Sky.

Bread in the Bones was also screened at the Lunenburg Documentary Festival, and will be shown at the Devour! Food and Film Festival in Wolfville, with a live online screening on October 23, 2020.
