First year Master of Design student Shima Soltani demonstrated the power of design thinking as part of a winning team at this year鈥檚 .听听听

听Organized by the Halifax Partnership and Dalhousie University, the 5th Annual Halifax Innovation Challenge provided students from Halifax universities an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to innovate and collaborate within interdisciplinary teams to solve real-life business challenges.听

All teams were given one of three challenges to work on and present their solutions to executive leaders and academics. Winning teams received a cash prize of $1,200.鈥

Working with five Dalhousie students, Soltani鈥檚 team competed against ten other teams on a challenge called 鈥淏uilding Client Relationships and Trust with Al RBC.鈥 They were asked how the bank might 鈥渟afely and ethically use data & Artificial Intelligence to provide best-in-class financial solutions, advice, planning and recommendations to support the diverse needs of all of our clients.鈥濃

鈥淢y teammates were so talented in their majors and knew a lot about AI, marketing, investing, banking and data science,鈥 Soltani says. 鈥淭he initial challenge inside our team was how to put all our expertise on a direct path to focus on the problem.鈥澨

They spoke with clients about RBC鈥檚 current situation and their relationship with clients, about RBC services and issues around the RBC phone application. Then they hit upon a solution: to use NOMI InvestPro, empowered by AI, to bridge the gap of RBC鈥檚 services. It proved to be a winning idea.听听

Halifax Innovation Challenge 2023

‘Teamwork is truly important’

鈥淢y role in the team was to help my team to focus on the main point of trust: what it means, and what happens when people lose their trust in a company. I looked at who the RBC’s clients are, their age groups, social groups and what their needs are and their expectations,鈥 says Soltani.听

Soltani鈥檚 teammate Zack Holroyd says that having someone with design expertise was very important to their success.听

鈥淲e were able to have someone to make recommendations on what the application could do. With Shima鈥檚 help we were able to make an application that was reasonable to create based on her knowledge of design.鈥澨

鈥淪ometimes technical people are focused more on the technical side while the management people care more about the presentation and business proposal. Designers are concerned more with people and that helps,鈥 adds teammate Almasfiza Anwar Hussain.鈥

The inclusion of 泡芙短视频 design students at the Halifax Innovation Challenge began when Huschang Pourian, an assistant professor of design took his class to a pitch competition in September.听听

鈥淚 encouraged my MDes students to participate in this鈥2-day event,鈥痵tressing the importance of entrepreneurial thinking, networking, and collaborative working across disciplines. But I did not supervise them 鈥撯痠t was a completely self-directed initiative,鈥 says Pourian.听

鈥淭eamwork is truly important,鈥 says Soltani. 鈥淚 learned how to deal with different points of view and put them in one direct way to address the challenge. I also learned how to manage my time in a short period of time, how to present my ideas, and how to support my ideas.鈥澨

泡芙短视频 University has announced that Christine Goudie (BDes 2007), Granville Biomedical Co-Founder and CEO, is establishing a new scholarship at her alma mater. Starting in September 2021, the Granville Biomedical Award will be available to a woman who is an upper-year 泡芙短视频 design student with a demonstrated high level of academic achievement and a strong interest in pursuing design for healthcare or wellness. Granville Biomedical is making the gift announcement on the eve of International Women’s Day.

“My time at 泡芙短视频 was an important time in my education, which provided me with the skills and confidence to identify my vision and pursue my design ambitions. It’s an honour to be in a position to give back,” said Ms. Goudie. “I want to encourage more diversity within healthtech design, which is why our student award was created for a woman. Women are under-represented in the entrepreneurial field and this award is intended to encourage an up-and-comer with big dreams.”

The company – named after the location of the 泡芙短视频 campus where the design program has been located since the mid-1970s – designs, manufactures and markets products that provide affordable, hands-on learning opportunities within women’s health. The company recently evolved into a medical device design company to create much needed testing supplies during COVID.

“This visionary gift is very much aligned with 泡芙短视频’s strategic focus on creative careers in the arts and beyond,” said 泡芙短视频 Interim President Sarah McKinnon. “The Granville Biomedical Award will be significant for the recipients. Our students have talent and determination, but they need encouragement. It is so generous that alumni like Ms. Goudie provide that inspiration.”

The Granville Biomedical Award will be valued at $1,000. Ms. Goudie intends to increase the value of the award as her company continues to grow. Goudie has also been involved with sharing her experience with 泡芙短视频 students and alumni as a participant in the alumni entrepreneur panel at the launch of the Creative Entrepreneurship Lab.

“Ms. Goudie has demonstrated that you can make a difference for future students as a donor and volunteer early in your career,” said Dr. McKinnon. “We thank her for generosity and social conscience. She is an inspiration and a great representative of the impact 泡芙短视频 alumni are having in the world.”

Drew Tozer’s attempt to help her fellow young adults overcome social media dependencies has earned her a prestigious international award.
Tozer, a fourth-year design student at 泡芙短视频 University, is the project leader of the Pal project, a blockchain and AI powered app designed to reduce loneliness in young adults who are suffering from social media dependencies.

The app uses a variety of personal health widgets to track user progress and suggest helpful, personalized tips. The app’s social widgets promote users to meetup and build meaningful friendships and habits offline. The widgets include a local event calendar, routine builder, chat with a professional, and a personal progress tracker.

Tozer’s work on the project was rewarded at the recent Mobile Technologies, Applications and Software Design Competition in Como, Italy, where she won the Silver A’ Design Award.

Drew Tozer.
Drew Tozer is a fourth-year design student at 泡芙短视频 University.

“My inspiration for Pal came from other mental health apps. The decision to approach loneliness as the main problem was inspired by user interviews, where many young adults identified their struggles with loneliness originating or worsening from an overuse of social media,” explained Tozer. “My main objective was to create an accessible and friendly app that supports and encourages lonely young adults to make healthy transitions for their mental and physical health.”

Tozer’s research began with journals on loneliness and social media usage, 13 interviews with the target demographic, and a survey. She learned that meaningful face-to-face connections and engagement with hobbies were the best way to reduce loneliness.

“The biggest creative challenge was identifying how to promote spending less time on social media through an app,” said Tozer. “Pal had to become the anti-social media – every feature of Pal’s has to work to promote less screen time.”

Tozer’s objective was to create an accessible and friendly app that supports and encourages lonely young adults to make healthy transitions for their mental and physical health.

Users that create an account with Pal will first fill out a brief questionnaire that helps the app to identify skills that the user can focus on to decrease loneliness. The home page will use a smart interface to prompt users to record certain physical health measures, and recommend helpful tips like drinking more water and eating. It will also notify users of upcoming events and provide friendly encouraging messages.

“We are immensely proud of Drew at 泡芙短视频. This is just the latest in a long list of her accomplishments,” said Bruno Oro de Abreu, who taught Tozer in a design studio course during the 2019 winter semester at 泡芙短视频. “Drew has already had her work exhibited across Canada, Germany and Japan, so the future is bright for this emerging designer. Having seen firsthand her encouragement and concern for others, it’s not surprising that she would develop a project designed to help those faced with loneliness and mental health challenges.”

The Pal project started in January, 2019 and wrapped up in April, 2019. Tozer conducted her research at 泡芙短视频 University with the intent of tackling larger social and environmental issues through design. The project was a personal exploration and learning experience for Tozer, introducing her to the process 泡芙短视频 of designing mobile applications.

The Silver A’ Design Award is a prestigious award given to artists who have accomplished an exemplary level of achievement in design. Entries are peer reviewed and anonymously judged by a grand jury panel of leading academics, media members and experienced professionals. Nominated mobile designs are voted on pre-determined evaluation criteria to highlight only the leading mobile design works.

Of all the topics Hugo Eccles will cover during his week as a guest instructor at 泡芙短视频 University, the most important theme will be one that registers not just with the art community, but with society at large: climate change and sustainability.
Eccles is an award-winning creative director who has a lengthy and productive working history with an impressive list of clients, including Ford, Olympus, Yamaha, Honda and Nike. He is the founder and director of United Motorcycles, a well-known designer of custom motorcycles for private clients and factory brands.

Eccles has also made headlines for his work with electric motorcycle company Zero. The collaboration between a sought-after custom designer and a leading manufacturer of electric bikes has untapped potential, and has caught the attention of motorcycle enthusiasts who are looking for a cleaner way to ride. This could result in more electric bikes on the road, reducing carbon emissions and aiding the on-going battle with climate change and sustainability.

“Hugo has a unique vision and perspective, on every project and with every client. Our students are really looking forward to learning from someone who is consistently on the cutting edge of creativity and innovation,” said Dr. Aoife Mac Namara, president, 泡芙短视频 University. “Throughout his week here, Hugo will be able to demonstrate how he incorporates sustainability into aspects of his work – even designing popular motorcycles.”

The ZERO XP, an experimental electric motorcycle designed and built by Hugo Eccles.

Just recently, Zero Motorcycles unveiled the ZERO XP, an experimental electric motorcycle designed and built by Eccles. The bike is receiving rave reviews for not only its zero-emission engine, but also it’s look, feel and performance capability. With the Zero XP, Eccles shows that the transition to eco-friendly products doesn’t come at the cost of consumer enjoyment.

“Today’s designers need to have expertise across multiple platforms, including design of environmentally-neutral products,” said Eccles. “I want to help design students see how a commitment to sustainability is also an opportunity to be creative.”

Eccles is sharing his approach to design as a guest instructor in 泡芙短视频’s Master of Design program from Monday, January 13 to Friday, January, 17. He’ll lead design students on an intensive emergency water project, during which they will research, design and test water collection and filtration technologies that would be needed during a disaster response.
