The courses represent several artistic fields and mediums, and can be viewed and registered for, here. Drawing from the strength of creative professionals in our community, classes will take place online with a variety of instructional techniques designed to engage students.

“One thing that has become evident during the pandemic is the value of art and creativity,” said Dr. Ann-Barbara Graff, Vice-President, Academic and Research, 泡芙短视频 University. “Our online youth and emerging artist classes are presented through group video discussions, instructor one-on-one feedback, and a mix of live and pre-recorded lessons. Students will be given projects and instruction to help them develop as artists.”

泡芙短视频’s School of Extended Studies is known for offering exciting courses for everyone at every level, from the curious to the professional. Extended Studies offers an array of courses that match students’ interests with their level of experience. In addition to the current offerings, more online content in more artistic mediums is currently in development.

“We welcome everyone who wants to learn more about art, craft and design and to explore the possibilities,” explained Dr. Graff. “Extended Studies courses and certificate programs are a great way to experience art education first hand, and the work students produce can be used as part of a portfolio for entrance to 泡芙短视频.

Extended Studies’ exciting 2020 spring and summer lineup includes:

• The Art of Design with Ben Rankin – students will learn the process 泡芙短视频 of design thinking and develop a creative and critical lens, while gaining insight and overview into communication, product, environmental, brand identity, and user-experience design.
• Introduction to Drawing with Sage Sidley – foundational drawing lessons, designed to help grow your observational skills.
• Art and Math with Sage Sidley – combine art and math principles for truly out-of-the-box lessons. By exploring the powerful relationships between mathematical concepts and artistic creation, these cross-disciplinary lessons will cover topics such as geometry, calculus, and algebra, alongside technical perspective and still life drawing.
• Portfolio Prep with Anna Sprague and Louis-Charles Dionne – A mix of conceptual art exercises and help in writing post-secondary application letters, this course is open for ages 18+.

泡芙短视频 welcomes a new president, Dr. Aoife Mac Namara

Aoife jumped into the role feet first, and has spent her first four months meeting key partners within the 泡芙短视频 Community as well as supporters from the community at-large 鈥� locally, nationally and internationally. These meetings will continue into the near year and are informing Aoife鈥檚 vision for the institution as the art school of the future. This vision will focus on strengthening partnerships with communities in and around the province, recognizing the value of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 contribution to the economy, environment and creative industries. Moreover, 泡芙短视频 is excited to continue consultations with partners, including Develop Nova Scotia, around the possibility of developing campus facilities close to the AGNS building. We look forward to completing our facilities review and being in a position to announce a final decision in 2020.

泡芙短视频 shines bright at Nocturne

Nocturne 2019: Art at Night saw a record number of artists affiliated with 泡芙短视频. More than 50 Nocturne participants were 泡芙短视频 students, faculty, alumni and staff. 鈥淣octurne brings so much energy to the city, and the art festival is especially captivating as it shines brightly into the night. It鈥檚 easy to see why so many members of the 泡芙短视频 community want to contribute,鈥� said Catherine Allen, manager, Extended Studies. Catherine collaborated in Embed and Embody, a workshop led by 泡芙短视频 student facilitators, in partnership with newcomers from Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS). Commitment to supporting significant research, pedagogy, and creative production

泡芙短视频 celebrated the signing of the Dimensions charter, demonstrating our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). The program addresses obstacles faced by, but not limited to, women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority/racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2+ communities. 泡芙短视频 understands that 鈥� when EDI is a priority 鈥� an institution will benefit from improved access to qualified potential participants, enhanced integrity of a program鈥檚 application and selection process 泡芙短视频es, strengthened research outputs and increased overall excellence in research.

In addition, the new Strategic Research Plan was completed and shared widely, detailing the university鈥檚 direction for 2019 鈥� 2022. 泡芙短视频鈥檚 research is driven by the goal to demonstrate its leadership in four distinct themes: visual and cultural literacies, sustainability and adaptability, material exploration, and art/design education and pedagogy. Lastly, 泡芙短视频 successfully launched the new Master of Arts in Art Education 鈥� accepting its first students in September 2019. The graduate program is designed to develop educators and researchers with the advanced knowledge to lead art education initiatives in a range of settings, including museums, art galleries, heritage sites, and community and educational organizations. 泡芙短视频 on the road 鈥� Alumni events in Ottawa and Toronto a great success

In the fall, 泡芙短视频 hosted two alumni events in Ontario to connect with 泡芙短视频 grads and introduce them to Aoife. Both events were well attended, and it was great to see many familiar faces. We are looking forward to planning more alumni events in 2020.

The revival of the 泡芙短视频 Lithography Workshop

The 泡芙短视频 University Lithography Workshop was established in 1969, earning international recognition and redefining the artistic potential of print in the 20^th century. It had a significant and lasting impact on the world of art and design, and included several famed artists from Canada and around the world. After two years of hard work and dedication from 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Anna Leonowens Gallery Systems, the official revival of the workshop took place in November 2019.

Artists Shuvinai Ashoona, Jordan Bennett, Shary Boyle, Brendan Fernandes, Amy Malbeuf, Ed Pien, Derek Sullivan, and Ericka Walker, in collaboration with Master Printer Jill Graham, created new, compelling and diverse lithographs that represent the new direction the project will take moving forward. The lithographs are available for purchase through nscad.litho.ca, the proceeds of which will be reinvested in collaborative printing and the 泡芙短视频 Press. Read more: /lithographyworkshop/

泡芙短视频 honours and hosts creators, curators and visionaries

The 2019 泡芙短视频 University graduation saw Rebecca Belmore, Michael Donovan and Robert Storr each awarded with a Doctor of Fine Arts. By honouring these three remarkable individuals, we recognize their substantial contributions to art and art education.

泡芙短视频 also hosted an array of significant visiting artists and guests, including Paula Fairfield, Ben Pike, Rapha毛lle de Groot, Mary Anne Jordan, Misha Horacek, Ufuk Gueray, Louise Perrone, Lauren Schaffer, Patrick Cruz, Hedi Kyle, and Paul Roth, among others.

Numerous distinctions merited by students and alumni

泡芙短视频 students and alumni were well decorated this year, and we are very proud of their accomplishments. A few notable alumni wins were the BMO 1^st Art Award (Seamus Gallagher, BFA 2019), Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award (Ursula Johnson, BFA 2006), Emmy Award (Paula Fairfield, BFA 1984), TIFF’s FIPRESCI prize (Heather Young, BFA 2009), Governor General鈥檚 Literary Award (Sydney Smith, BFA 2006), among others. Students Ada Denil and Jessie McLaughlin were awarded the Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award 鈥撀� Ada the recipient of the Susan Wood Award and Jessie the Charlotte Wilson-Hammond/Visual Arts Nova Scotia Award. Rebecca Devenish won the Mattinson Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities, and students Emma Allain, Tyler Anderson, Drayden Decosta, Megan Kyak-Monteith, Alex Linfield, Liv Mansveld, Luke Mohan, Kim Paquet, Mark Sark and Wiebke Schroeder were all shortlisted for the 2019 Starfish Student Art Award, with Paquet winning the grand prize.

Wide-Scale Watercolour Painting

With the little marvels of the medium in blooms and bleeds, watercolour painting has traditionally been a smaller-scale subject. Ideally suited for quick studies, landscape sketches, or sitting portraits, watercolours have naturally veered towards small and mid-size paintings. But what if you could learn to manipulate that medium on a human-sized scale? Artist Alice MacLean (BFA 2012) is leading her first class with 泡芙短视频 Extended Studies in teaching folks how to make watercolour work for them on a large-scale.

Say Hello to Sculpture

After a long hiatus of the subject, we鈥檙e pleased to welcome an encompassing introduction to sculpture with 泡芙短视频 all-star, Brea McAllister. Designed to help any beginner on the topic of sculpting, Brea will guide the class along, covering topics like building an armature, exploring exterior materials, looking at different ways of construction, mouldmaking in plaster and silicone, casting and soft sculpture. Lectures, demonstrations, critiques, as well as time to work are built into the course, so you鈥檙e not going to find a better way to get your feet wet!

The Craft of Self-Publishing

Have you ever had a book you wanted to put out into the world? Be it a zine, an artist book, or other piece of printed matter, what defines a book is an ever-changing topic. Under the instruction of 泡芙短视频 MFA grad and book-maker Emma Allain, you will learn the first steps in how to make your own self-published printed matter. By going over the key components of any book (basic bookbinding, layout design, digital printing) while you work by hand and by computer program, Emma will supplement your knowledge with contemporary examples to help inspire and guide you.

Sew Green with Linnet Finley

One of the cities鈥� most popular textile artists is back, with a brand new course! Anyone who knows the work or instruction of Linnet Finley knows her projects to be thoughtful, well-designed, and resourceful. In Sew Green, Linnet will teach you a series of projects designed to reduce your waste while producing art at the same time. Students can expect instruction in beginner hand-sewing and machine sewing techniques in a relaxed, comfortable setting. We don鈥檛 expect spots to stay open for long though, so sign up soon to save your seat.

March Break

For the upcoming youth break, we鈥檝e planned a truly exciting week of creativity for ages 5-18. Taking place at the 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, students will craft their own stories, learn to sculpt, draw and print, and experience the breadth of 泡芙短视频 University studios in Art 101. There鈥檚 an additional camp this week for ages 11-13 in collaboration with the Writer鈥檚 Federation of Nova Scotia for all the writers out there, and we look forward to a week of exciting art ahead. All camps are 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. with early pick-up and drop-off available, free of charge. Campers can expect to get their hands messy as they tackle a plethora of artistic mediums, challenging their boundaries and seeing how art connects to their world.

The air is a little brisk this week as we say goodbye to the summer and welcome in the fabulous Fall! Autumn is the perfect time to learn a new skill or develop an existing passion, and with our full line-up of art classes for children, youth, and adults in all mediums, now is the best time to practice & grow! Whether it鈥檚 perfecting your printmaking skills in Screenprinting on Paper, or exploring the abstract side of things in NEW! Abstract Painting, there鈥檚 lots to learn about this season!

Pre-University Painting and Drawing for Teens

We鈥檝e grown our Saturday Youth classes to include advanced lessons for the teens! Jack Ross leads Pre-University Prep: Drawing and Painting for ages 14-18, where students will learn more in-depth lessons about drawing, perspective, composition and more, balanced alongside lessons in acrylic painting. Jack teaches our ever-popular Painting Like the Impressionists and NEW! Landscape Painting for adults so students are in good hands to learn all about acrylics. These courses are geared towards increasing student’s abilites as they start looking to advanced education in the arts. In addition to these courses, we’re also welcoming back Saturday Ceramics for ages 10-12 and 13-18, as well as having our classic Saturday Art courses on offer for ages 5-7, 8-10,and 11-13 with Laura de Palma, Patrick Burgomaster, and Kyle Bridgett.

Jewellery is Back!

From a term on hiatus, Introductory Jewellery Making and Jewellery II are back! Both taught by Emily Wareham, the introductory course will teach you the most-used techniques of jewellers on a project-by-project basis. Designed to welcome every beginner, no prior experience for this course is necessary! In Jewellery II, Emily will go in-depth into more advanced subjects, while giving you the time and space to work on personal projects.
The 泡芙短视频 University Jewellery studios are some of the most popular and sought-after workspaces in the city, with access to every jeweller鈥檚 tool, torch, and workbench you can imagine. Spots are limited to 12 in each course, so be sure to check it out!

Afternoon Classes

To help accommodate the varied schedules of folks, we鈥檙e bringing back our most popular classes as daytime sessions! For this term, Introductory Acrylic, Introductory Oil, and Introductory Watercolour Painting are offered as both an evening (6:30-9:30pm) and an afternoon session (1:30-4:30pm) at the 泡芙短视频 Port Campus (1107 Marginal Road), taught by Charlotte Marble and Bob Williams. Patrick Burgomaster, all-around Renaissance man, drawing instructor extraordinaire and Weird Al Yankovic fan, will be teaching drawing lessons to the beginner and the experienced in Introductory Drawing C and Drawing II for adults. Introductory Jewellery Making will be held on Sundays from 1-4pm at the 泡芙短视频 Fountain Campus (5163 Duke Street), led by Emily Wareham. One of the city’s most famous calligraphers, Lisa MacPherson of Scribble & Script, has expanded her fan-favourite calligraphy courses to be more in-depth and offered on Saturdays (Introduction to Modern Calligraphy from 10am-1pm and Modern Calligraphy: Beyond the Basics from 2pm-5pm). She’s also bringing a new course to our Fall lineup, NEW! Calligraphy and Watercolour: a Botanical Explorations workshop! For two Saturday sessions, Lisa will guide your hand through strokes of the pen and the brush in studying the similar forms between plants and lettering.

Digital Media: a Medley

More and more people are finding the need to expand their skillset with creative computer programs. For those who are looking to grow their digital media skills, help supplement their CV, or get hands-on experience for work, we are pleased to have Introductory Adobe Photoshop, Introductory Adobe InDesign, Introductory Adobe Illustrator, and Intro to Adobe Premiere on offer. These courses offer a comprehensive look into the tools, shortcuts, and abilities of what Adobe Creative Suite programs have to offer. In addition to the 10 weeks of tuition, registered students also have access to the 泡芙短视频 University Multimedia lab, in order to complete assignments and practice.

Whether you want to get out and about exploring your city, are looking to make a physical, professional example of your work, or want to unlock the full potential of your smartphone, there’s something for everyone!

Turn Your Talent Into a Business

Are you going to be travelling around the province a lot this spring? Maybe you’re outside the city, and have the itch to expand your current passion into a business? Carolyn Crewe of Duckish Natural Skincare is here this term to teach you the ins and outs of starting a business from scratch with Turn Your Talent Into a Business (ONLINE)! This exciting course is done entirely online, so there’s no need to be tied down by location! Carolyn will discuss how to design a business model as well as the fundamentals of marketing, basic financial information, approaching places to sell your work, building your website—it is a wealth of information, perfect for those looking to expand their passion professionally!

Getting A-Head

泡芙短视频 University MFA student Cullen Bingeman comes to our classes for the first time, to offer his expertise in portraiture with NEW! Head-Start on Head Drawing! Drawing from his extensive studies in the subject, Cullen will guide you in the tools, tips, and tricks in creating more realistic, artistic portraits. If you’d like to get your hands messy, we’re offering NEW! Sculpting the Human Figure with Leigh Gillam, who will teach you how to build up your creation through studies in the skeletal structure, the muscle groups, and more.

Summer Camps Galore!

It’s a full season of fun for the little ones this year! For ages 5-18, our summer is bursting at the seams with classes in animation, painting, drawing, writing, ceramics, fashion, sculpture, sewing, comic creation—there is just so much in motion! All camps are 9am-4pm with early pick-up and drop-off available, free of charge. Campers can expect to get their hands messy as they tackle a plethora of artistic mediums, challenging their boundaries and seeing how art connects to our environment, performance, the city, monsters, and more. We’re halfway at capacity though, so be sure to see what’s available before it’s gone!

Typography for all Types with Lorraine Albert

Typography has a rich history and an immense impact on our visual world. It has the potential to facilitate the articulation of ideas, improve communication, and attract us visually. This course will introduce students to typography by dissecting letterforms and looking more closely at their unique characteristics. As the course progresses from letter 鈥� to word 鈥� to sentence 鈥� to paragraph, student will experiment with font families, spacing, layout, hierarchy, and the grid while becoming more familiar with type terminology/vocabulary.

Micheal Day on Professional Growth and Photography Practices

We’re pleased to introduce you to Michael Day, one of our newest instructors to the ranks of the fantastic Extended Studies instructor roster. Michael is bringing some inspirational ideas to the Winter term. The聽Digital Communication Design course, it’s geared to help those who have found the need to upgrade their understanding of visual design. Our ever-changing economy demands more visual fluency in those who work in event management, trade shows, marketing, communications, public relations, copywriting, not-for-profit organizations, web design, social media managers—you name it, a crash course in understanding commercial print practices is becoming key! Through class exercises, discussions and demonstrations, Michael will guide you through how to set up files to print in commercial printers, FAQs, legality protocol in using images, an overview of the Adobe Creative Suites, and more. If you’re a fan of photography, Micheal will also be teaching Pinhole Photography, and the use/manipulation of polaroid pictures in Instant Gratification!

Stellar Youth Opportunities

We are again bringing back our classic children’s art classes with Saturday Youth Art for ages 5 to 18, as well as the fast-growing favourite, Saturday Youth Ceramics! Taught by Annabel Biro, Saturday Youth Ceramics will teach handbuilding, pattern development, and the construction of functional & verstile pieces in everyone’s favourite medium, clay! We’re also pleased to welcome back Comics & Zines for Teens with comic catalyst Kyle Bridgett! Taught in the evenings, this class will guide students in comic collaborations, story and sequence pacing, and more. Last but not least, we’re also gearing up for our fabulous March Break classes-which will include Hands-On Art History, Comics and Stories, Brushstrokes and Beyond, and Art 101. A week full of exploration, fun, and usually an artful mess, these are not to be missed!
