The Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) recently announced that 泡芙短视频 University’s Dr. April Mandrona, Assistant Professor in the Division of Art History and Contemporary Culture and Director of Art Education, was awarded a Partnership Development Grant in the sum of $199,999. April is the principal investigator and therefore has primary responsibility for the overall direction of the research and its related activities.

The research, titled Storying Transnational Knowledges: Connection through Narrative, aims to address the potential of multimodal storytelling (e.g. written and spoken language, visual, audio, etc.) and network building for the well-being and cultural “survivance” of newcomer young people and their communities in Canada and Australia. This research will be explored across four locations: Halifax, Nova Scotia; Montreal, Quebec; Darwin, Northern Territory; and Adelaide, South Australia. Each site will engage 15-20 young people and five adult knowledge keepers. This new partnership involves 泡芙短视频 University, McGill University, Charles Darwin University, the University of South Australia, Byenvini à Montréal, and the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia.

Partnership Development Grants provide support to foster new research and/or related activities with new or existing partners; and to design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities. The grants are valued at $75,000 to $200,000, over one to three years. The program purpose is to provide funding to enable social sciences and humanities research collaboration with partners across the academic, public, private and not-for-profit sectors. This program helps stimulate leading-edge, internationally competitive research, fosters strong and productive research collaborations with multisectoral partners and accelerates the use of research results by organizations that can harness them for Canadian economic, social and cultural development.

Please join us in congratulating April! We look forward to seeing this research develop and the connections and stories that unfold through this important work.

Fogo Island Arts (FIA) and 泡芙短视频 University are pleased to announce a new internship partnership made possible through the generous support of artist and former 泡芙短视频 faculty member Eric Fischl. The Eric Fischl Fogo Island Arts Internship will offer two 泡芙短视频 University students or alumni the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in arts administration with Fogo Island Arts in 2021-22.

“We are delighted to pursue our work with Eric Fischl and to forge new connections across the Atlantic Region, all in the service of creating exceptional opportunities for learning and exchange,” said Nicolaus Schafhausen, FIA Strategic Director. “We are extremely grateful for Eric’s support as well as the chance to work with students trained within the rigorous creative framework and celebrated history of 泡芙短视频 University.”

Participants in The Eric Fischl Fogo Island Arts Internship program will work as support staff in the offices of Fogo Island Arts, contributing to day-to-day program operations and communications over a three-month period. The interns will receive a stipend and will be provided with housing, travel expenses, and studio space, in addition to invaluable opportunities to engage with FIA’s international artists-in-residence and community members across Fogo Island. The 泡芙短视频 University partnership is the second FIA internship program funded by Fischl and follows the same parameters as the ongoing partnership with the New York Academy of Art (NYAA), established in 2017.

“Fogo Island Arts is a place where artistic exploration, research and knowledge-sharing is nurtured and encouraged,” says Melanie Colosimo, Director of 泡芙短视频 University’s Anna Leonowens Gallery. “This type of learning opportunity is incredibly valuable, as putting practice into play can prove to be a pivotal moment in establishing a career in the arts. The 泡芙短视频 community is fortunate to have access to this internship.”

The partnership between FIA, Fischl, and 泡芙短视频 University reflects a shared understanding of the need for expanded educational opportunities within the contemporary art world, as well as the critical role that art and education play in enriching communities.

Applications will be open to 泡芙短视频 students and alumni in March 2021. For more information on the internship and application procedure, please visit 泡芙短视频 University’s .

From lilong to fences, Shanghai to Halifax, the subject matters of Yuan鈥檚 paintings help him to talk to his memories and thoughts. Karin Jones (MFA 2018) is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in jewellery. Karin鈥檚 recent work examines the ways in which historical narratives shape our identities. She is currently an instructor at Vancouver Community College鈥檚 Jewellery Art and Design program, where she is also serving as Department Head. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, Finland, Korea and Japan.

Why did you choose 泡芙短视频?

When I started, it was the only MFA in jewellery in Canada. Also, my father is from Nova Scotia, and I wanted to get to know the place he was from, and my relatives there, a little better. So I didn’t really consider any other institutions.

What is your fondest memory from your time at 泡芙短视频?

The many wonderful conversations I had with faculty, classmates, and visiting artists, in my studio and over drinks on the town.

How did 泡芙短视频 help prepare you for your career?

Actually I was already well into my career when I came to 泡芙短视频. But it really helped me to understand contemporary art better, and how to place my work within that context. Also, the MFA program was amazing for having time, space and mentorship to create the body of work which I’m now exhibiting.

Karin Jones
Karin Jones.

Describe the importance of African Heritage Month for Black artists?

That’s a tricky question because I’m not really sure how important I think it is. It’s great that institutions will have some programming for Black artists in February, but the flip side is that there’s a risk of always having a show in February, and having nothing the rest of the year. I like to think we’ve made enough advances that galleries could just show lots of art by people of all cultures all the time, but maybe this is too optimistic! I have met a really inspiring number of Black women curators in really well-respected institutions in the past couple of years, so I really can see a near future where we don’t have to dedicate the shortest month of the year to showing Black art.

In the past 20 years, you graduated from VCC鈥檚 Jewellery Art & Design program, had exhibitions in Japan, the United States and across Canada, earned a master鈥檚 degree from 泡芙短视频, and recently became the department head of Jewellery Design at VCC. Throughout this journey, what are the most important lessons you learned that helped shape you as an artist?

At one point I had to make a conscious effort to divorce my creative work from my financial well-being. I have experienced a certain amount of failure when it came to supporting myself with my creative work, and it was really damaging to my creativity. I also feel that I can have more freedom with my work if I don’t have to worry about it selling, or even being accepted for shows. The drawback is that my teaching job sometimes takes over and I don’t have a lot of time for my creative work. But I really don’t know a lot of people who have the perfect balance of financial stability and creativity anyway, so I think it is up to us to decide in which areas we want to make sacrifices, and when.

How does your identity inform your work?

My work is all about identity. I think when you grow up as a visible minority you can’t help but be affected by it and start questioning it at an early age, like in kindergarten. So I feel I’m constantly trying to figure out how identity works. How does the world see me? How do people and societies choose their identities? Right now I’m thinking and reading a lot about how Greek and Roman culture has basically been co-opted by all of the cultures of Europe and beyond. Why is this more a part of European identity than the Dark Ages, or the weird religious cults that emerged after the plague years? Obviously because everyone wants to claim something noble, or that they’ve been taught is noble, in their past to identify with. But I find it fascinating that we all just take this identity for granted, every time we walk past a building with Greek columns in front of it, whether it’s a courthouse, an art gallery, a university or a slave-owner’s mansion.

Discussions like these are important, where would you like to see improvements in arts education and the arts community in general?

I think institutions need to include more people of colour at every step and every level 鈥 in reading lists, in the work that’s shown in classes, in the faculty itself.

Who are the artists that you most admire? What type of influence do they have on your work?聽

Last year I got the chance to attend an artist talk by Kerry James Marshall in Vancouver. It was a packed house, and it was almost a religious experience for me. Sometimes I think back on that night with a sigh 鈥 the night I got to spend an hour listening to Kerry James Marshall talk about his work. I love work that has an emotional impact and is also done in a really well-thought-out way. I think there is so much art out there that relies too heavily on intellect, and it leaves me cold. So that combination of the head and the heart in art is something I really aspire to.

Of all the topics Hugo Eccles will cover during his week as a guest instructor at 泡芙短视频 University, the most important theme will be one that registers not just with the art community, but with society at large: climate change and sustainability.
Eccles is an award-winning creative director who has a lengthy and productive working history with an impressive list of clients, including Ford, Olympus, Yamaha, Honda and Nike. He is the founder and director of United Motorcycles, a well-known designer of custom motorcycles for private clients and factory brands.

Eccles has also made headlines for his work with electric motorcycle company Zero. The collaboration between a sought-after custom designer and a leading manufacturer of electric bikes has untapped potential, and has caught the attention of motorcycle enthusiasts who are looking for a cleaner way to ride. This could result in more electric bikes on the road, reducing carbon emissions and aiding the on-going battle with climate change and sustainability.

“Hugo has a unique vision and perspective, on every project and with every client. Our students are really looking forward to learning from someone who is consistently on the cutting edge of creativity and innovation,” said Dr. Aoife Mac Namara, president, 泡芙短视频 University. “Throughout his week here, Hugo will be able to demonstrate how he incorporates sustainability into aspects of his work – even designing popular motorcycles.”

The ZERO XP, an experimental electric motorcycle designed and built by Hugo Eccles.

Just recently, Zero Motorcycles unveiled the ZERO XP, an experimental electric motorcycle designed and built by Eccles. The bike is receiving rave reviews for not only its zero-emission engine, but also it’s look, feel and performance capability. With the Zero XP, Eccles shows that the transition to eco-friendly products doesn’t come at the cost of consumer enjoyment.

“Today’s designers need to have expertise across multiple platforms, including design of environmentally-neutral products,” said Eccles. “I want to help design students see how a commitment to sustainability is also an opportunity to be creative.”

Eccles is sharing his approach to design as a guest instructor in 泡芙短视频’s Master of Design program from Monday, January 13 to Friday, January, 17. He’ll lead design students on an intensive emergency water project, during which they will research, design and test water collection and filtration technologies that would be needed during a disaster response.

As we’re about to ring in the new year, we are looking back on 2019 to celebrate 泡芙短视频鈥檚 accomplishments and favourite moments. No change was more significant than the appointment of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 new president Dr. Aoife Mac Namara, which took place in August 2019. Aoife鈥檚 tenure follows that of Professor Dianne Taylor-Gearing, who led the university to financial stability and growth. We are grateful for her dedication to 泡芙短视频 over the last five years.
Below is a snapshot of the highlights from 2019, and throughout the year in review we see a consistency in certain themes 鈥 notably collaboration, connection and distinction. We are looking forward to seeing all that 2020 will bring, and wish you and yours a Happy New Year!

泡芙短视频 welcomes a new president, Dr. Aoife Mac Namara

Aoife jumped into the role feet first, and has spent her first four months meeting key partners within the 泡芙短视频 Community as well as supporters from the community at-large 鈥 locally, nationally and internationally. These meetings will continue into the near year and are informing Aoife鈥檚 vision for the institution as the art school of the future. This vision will focus on strengthening partnerships with communities in and around the province, recognizing the value of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 contribution to the economy, environment and creative industries. Moreover, 泡芙短视频 is excited to continue consultations with partners, including Develop Nova Scotia, around the possibility of developing campus facilities close to the AGNS building. We look forward to completing our facilities review and being in a position to announce a final decision in 2020.

泡芙短视频 shines bright at Nocturne

Nocturne 2019: Art at Night saw a record number of artists affiliated with 泡芙短视频. More than 50 Nocturne participants were 泡芙短视频 students, faculty, alumni and staff. 鈥淣octurne brings so much energy to the city, and the art festival is especially captivating as it shines brightly into the night. It鈥檚 easy to see why so many members of the 泡芙短视频 community want to contribute,鈥 said Catherine Allen, manager, Extended Studies. Catherine collaborated in Embed and Embody, a workshop led by 泡芙短视频 student facilitators, in partnership with newcomers from Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS). The finished products were on display at the Anna. Read more: /nocturne2019/

Commitment to supporting significant research, pedagogy, and creative production

泡芙短视频 celebrated the signing of the Dimensions charter, demonstrating our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). The program addresses obstacles faced by, but not limited to, women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority/racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2+ communities. 泡芙短视频 understands that 鈥 when EDI is a priority 鈥 an institution will benefit from improved access to qualified potential participants, enhanced integrity of a program鈥檚 application and selection process 泡芙短视频es, strengthened research outputs and increased overall excellence in research.

In addition, the new Strategic Research Plan was completed and shared widely, detailing the university鈥檚 direction for 2019 鈥 2022. 泡芙短视频鈥檚 research is driven by the goal to demonstrate its leadership in four distinct themes: visual and cultural literacies, sustainability and adaptability, material exploration, and art/design education and pedagogy. The Strategic Research Plan can be viewed here: https://issuu.com/nscadadmissions/docs/nscad_strategic_research_plan_2019-2022_online

Lastly, 泡芙短视频 successfully launched the new Master of Arts in Art Education 鈥 accepting its first students in September 2019. The graduate program is designed to develop educators and researchers with the advanced knowledge to lead art education initiatives in a range of settings, including museums, art galleries, heritage sites, and community and educational organizations. More on the program can be found here: /study-at-nscad/graduate/master-of-arts-in-art-education/

泡芙短视频 on the road 鈥 Alumni events in Ottawa and Toronto a great success

In the fall, 泡芙短视频 hosted two alumni events in Ontario to connect with 泡芙短视频 grads and introduce them to Aoife. Both events were well attended, and it was great to see many familiar faces. We are looking forward to planning more alumni events in 2020.

The revival of the 泡芙短视频 Lithography Workshop

The 泡芙短视频 University Lithography Workshop was established in 1969, earning international recognition and redefining the artistic potential of print in the 20th century. It had a significant and lasting impact on the world of art and design, and included several famed artists from Canada and around the world. After two years of hard work and dedication from 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Anna Leonowens Gallery Systems, the official revival of the workshop took place in November 2019.

Artists Shuvinai Ashoona, Jordan Bennett, Shary Boyle, Brendan Fernandes, Amy Malbeuf, Ed Pien, Derek Sullivan, and Ericka Walker, in collaboration with Master Printer Jill Graham, created new, compelling and diverse lithographs that represent the new direction the project will take moving forward. The lithographs are available for purchase through nscad.litho.ca, the proceeds of which will be reinvested in collaborative printing and the 泡芙短视频 Press. Read more: /lithographyworkshop/

Our graduate programs

Master of Arts in Art Education

The Masters of Arts in Art Education is a new graduate program at 泡芙短视频. The program offers rigorous research training and hands-on experience to prepare students for careers in a variety of art education settings. Students choose from three different streams: applied pedagogy in art education, museum and curatorial, and community-based practice.

Master of Design

泡芙短视频鈥檚 60-credit Master of Design uniquely allows students the opportunity to take both studio and theory courses, culminating in a graduate thesis or degree project. The emphasis of the program is on practice-led research where students will present their findings through their design work, accompanied by an extended written paper, by a public presentation or in a group exhibition.

Master of Fine Arts

The Master of Fine Arts degree is internationally recognized as a standard qualification required for teaching craft and visual arts at post-secondary educational institutions such as colleges and universities.
