The Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) recently announced that 泡芙短视频 University’s Dr. April Mandrona, Assistant Professor in the Division of Art History and Contemporary Culture and Director of Art Education, was awarded a Partnership Development Grant in the sum of $199,999. April is the principal investigator and therefore has primary responsibility for the overall direction of the research and its related activities.

The research, titled Storying Transnational Knowledges: Connection through Narrative, aims to address the potential of multimodal storytelling (e.g. written and spoken language, visual, audio, etc.) and network building for the well-being and cultural “survivance” of newcomer young people and their communities in Canada and Australia. This research will be explored across four locations: Halifax, Nova Scotia; Montreal, Quebec; Darwin, Northern Territory; and Adelaide, South Australia. Each site will engage 15-20 young people and five adult knowledge keepers. This new partnership involves 泡芙短视频 University, McGill University, Charles Darwin University, the University of South Australia, Byenvini à Montréal, and the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia.

Partnership Development Grants provide support to foster new research and/or related activities with new or existing partners; and to design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities. The grants are valued at $75,000 to $200,000, over one to three years. The program purpose is to provide funding to enable social sciences and humanities research collaboration with partners across the academic, public, private and not-for-profit sectors. This program helps stimulate leading-edge, internationally competitive research, fosters strong and productive research collaborations with multisectoral partners and accelerates the use of research results by organizations that can harness them for Canadian economic, social and cultural development.

Please join us in congratulating April! We look forward to seeing this research develop and the connections and stories that unfold through this important work.

As we’re about to ring in the new year, we are looking back on 2019 to celebrate 泡芙短视频鈥檚 accomplishments and favourite moments. No change was more significant than the appointment of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 new president Dr. Aoife Mac Namara, which took place in August 2019. Aoife鈥檚 tenure follows that of Professor Dianne Taylor-Gearing, who led the university to financial stability and growth. We are grateful for her dedication to 泡芙短视频 over the last five years.
Below is a snapshot of the highlights from 2019, and throughout the year in review we see a consistency in certain themes 鈥 notably collaboration, connection and distinction. We are looking forward to seeing all that 2020 will bring, and wish you and yours a Happy New Year!

泡芙短视频 welcomes a new president, Dr. Aoife Mac Namara

Aoife jumped into the role feet first, and has spent her first four months meeting key partners within the 泡芙短视频 Community as well as supporters from the community at-large 鈥 locally, nationally and internationally. These meetings will continue into the near year and are informing Aoife鈥檚 vision for the institution as the art school of the future. This vision will focus on strengthening partnerships with communities in and around the province, recognizing the value of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 contribution to the economy, environment and creative industries. Moreover, 泡芙短视频 is excited to continue consultations with partners, including Develop Nova Scotia, around the possibility of developing campus facilities close to the AGNS building. We look forward to completing our facilities review and being in a position to announce a final decision in 2020.

泡芙短视频 shines bright at Nocturne

Nocturne 2019: Art at Night saw a record number of artists affiliated with 泡芙短视频. More than 50 Nocturne participants were 泡芙短视频 students, faculty, alumni and staff. 鈥淣octurne brings so much energy to the city, and the art festival is especially captivating as it shines brightly into the night. It鈥檚 easy to see why so many members of the 泡芙短视频 community want to contribute,鈥 said Catherine Allen, manager, Extended Studies. Catherine collaborated in Embed and Embody, a workshop led by 泡芙短视频 student facilitators, in partnership with newcomers from Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS). The finished products were on display at the Anna. Read more: /nocturne2019/

Commitment to supporting significant research, pedagogy, and creative production

泡芙短视频 celebrated the signing of the Dimensions charter, demonstrating our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). The program addresses obstacles faced by, but not limited to, women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority/racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2+ communities. 泡芙短视频 understands that 鈥 when EDI is a priority 鈥 an institution will benefit from improved access to qualified potential participants, enhanced integrity of a program鈥檚 application and selection process 泡芙短视频es, strengthened research outputs and increased overall excellence in research.

In addition, the new Strategic Research Plan was completed and shared widely, detailing the university鈥檚 direction for 2019 鈥 2022. 泡芙短视频鈥檚 research is driven by the goal to demonstrate its leadership in four distinct themes: visual and cultural literacies, sustainability and adaptability, material exploration, and art/design education and pedagogy. The revival of the 泡芙短视频 Lithography Workshop

The 泡芙短视频 University Lithography Workshop was established in 1969, earning international recognition and redefining the artistic potential of print in the 20th century. It had a significant and lasting impact on the world of art and design, and included several famed artists from Canada and around the world. After two years of hard work and dedication from 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Anna Leonowens Gallery Systems, the official revival of the workshop took place in November 2019.

Artists Shuvinai Ashoona, Jordan Bennett, Shary Boyle, Brendan Fernandes, Amy Malbeuf, Ed Pien, Derek Sullivan, and Ericka Walker, in collaboration with Master Printer Jill Graham, created new, compelling and diverse lithographs that represent the new direction the project will take moving forward. Our graduate programs

Master of Arts in Art Education

The Masters of Arts in Art Education is a new graduate program at 泡芙短视频. The program offers rigorous research training and hands-on experience to prepare students for careers in a variety of art education settings. Students choose from three different streams: applied pedagogy in art education, museum and curatorial, and community-based practice.

Master of Design

泡芙短视频鈥檚 60-credit Master of Design uniquely allows students the opportunity to take both studio and theory courses, culminating in a graduate thesis or degree project. The emphasis of the program is on practice-led research where students will present their findings through their design work, accompanied by an extended written paper, by a public presentation or in a group exhibition.

Master of Fine Arts

The Master of Fine Arts degree is internationally recognized as a standard qualification required for teaching craft and visual arts at post-secondary educational institutions such as colleges and universities. The 泡芙短视频 MFA provides students with the opportunity to develop their work in a context of intense critical discussion. Pedagogy, research, creation and other integral academic courses enhance the studio focus. Students are selected for their capability as artists and craftspersons, their critical abilities, and the personal qualities and interests that might contribute to their success as teachers and scholars.

Two 泡芙短视频 University students are exploring the impacts of colonization on modern day health and wellness with an all-inclusive exhibition, Down to the Wick.
Kayla Rudderham and Alexia Mitchell, both of the Master of Art in Art Education program, describe Down to the Wick as a multi-disciplinary group exhibition investigating how colonization has had an impact on the ways we cope with mental and emotional distress, and how artistic practice can help or hinder these experiences.

Down to the Wick officially opens on Friday, November 15 at 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Treaty Space Gallery.

鈥淭his project goes way beyond expectations of a class project, and has built and nurtured partnerships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders across the city,鈥 said Dr. Carla Taunton, associate professor, Chair of art history and contemporary culture, and special advisor to the VP academic and research on social justice and decolonization. 鈥淭hey engage with two-eyed seeing as a curatorial methodology, to describe utilizing the strengths of both Indigenous and settler ways of knowing, together for the benefit of all. Through this exhibition, they have provided a forum that fosters meaning, purpose, belonging and hope among people dealing with mental health issues.鈥

Rudderham and Mitchell are students in Dr. Taunton鈥檚 Radical Curating class, which is where they came up with the idea and plan for Down to the Wick.

Their goal was to demonstrate that colonialism isn鈥檛 just about land and economics, but has also influenced society鈥檚 ideas of success, progress and well-being. They are using the exhibition to show that regardless of one鈥檚 culture or background, there are societal pressures relating to the constant search for progression, achievement, and even perfection.

鈥淭he pressure we put on ourselves is unhealthy and we are in need of systemic change. People are feeling overwhelmed with the amount of perceived responsibilities that are imposed on our society. This issue can lead to anxiety disorders, or depression. These issues are greatly exacerbated by factors like stigmatization and the colonial framework of mental health,鈥 said Mitchell.

鈥淭hese pressures are hard to ignore, and our main methods of escaping these troubling issues are filled with messages that not only reinforce, but amplify, the colonialist undertones of our collective communities,鈥 added Rudderham. 鈥淓ven if we wish to separate ourselves from these themes, we are left with the residual consequences that colonialism leaves in its wake. Concerns of climate change, discrimination, wars, and economic worries plague even our downtime. The result is a culture that disregards the importance of self-care, seeing it as self-indulgence, putting us all at higher risks of burnout.鈥

Down to the Wick goes from November 15-29, 2019 and includes a variety of exhibitions and art forms, and takes place at 泡芙短视频鈥檚 downtown campuses. Among the events included in the project are:

  • November 15, 5 p.m., Treaty Space Gallery, 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, Opening Night, featuring artists, curators, 泡芙短视频 faculty, staff and students. A smudging and opening prayer will take place.
  • November 21, 7-8 p.m., Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (Gallery 5), Bring to Light panel discussion on wellness, accessibility, and the importance of bringing Indigenous and western practices together.
  • November 22, 5-8 p.m., Art Bar +Projects, Break the Isolation, an opportunity to meet and converse with new people in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
  • November 25, 6-8 p.m., 泡芙短视频 Port Campus, Creation Medication, heat bag creating, button making and rock painting.
  • November 26, 7 p.m., 泡芙短视频 Bell Theatre (Fountain Campus), screening of Cazywise, a movie that explores what can be learned from people around the world who have turned their psychological crisis into a positive, transformative experience.
  • November 29, 5-7 p.m., Closing Reception, Treaty Space Gallery, Port Campus.

All events during Down to the Wick are free to attend and open to the public. For more information on Down to the Wick and other 泡芙短视频 University projects and initiatives, visit nscad.ca.

泡芙短视频 will accept its first students into a new Master of Arts in Art Education degree program in September 2019. The graduate program is designed to develop educators and researchers with the advanced knowledge to lead art education initiatives in a range of settings, including museums, art galleries, heritage sites, and community and educational organizations. 泡芙短视频 is planning to welcome the new candidates for the Masters of Art in Art Education who will join the university鈥檚 creative graduate community of Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design program students.
The 36-credit program can be taken full-time or part-time and includes a 240-hour field-based practicum experience. A unique feature of the program is the option to choose from one of three specialized program streams: museum and curatorial; community-based practice; and applied pedagogy in art education.

鈥淢useum and curatorial stream students will acquire advanced knowledge of art education programming in settings such as galleries, museums and heritage sites,鈥 said Dr. April Mandrona, program director. 鈥淕raduates will be skilled in expanding on conventional approaches to public engagement and in developing immersive learning experiences.鈥

鈥淭he community-based practice specialization will appeal to students with an interest in careers developing art education programming that is responsive to the needs and experiences of communities,鈥 said Mandrona. 鈥淭hese students will have a strong interest in outreach, activism and contextualized learning about art and culture.鈥

鈥淔or students seeking advanced knowledge of art education in more traditional settings, the applied pedagogy in art education stream is an ideal fit,鈥 said Mandrona. 鈥淭he emphasis is on art education practices and approaches suitable for children, teens, adults and older adults, with an overall focus on human development and well-being.鈥

Developed in close consultation with art and culture sector organizations locally and from across Canada, the program will be the only one of its kind in the Atlantic region.

鈥淎rt education plays an ever-expanding role in institutions and communities around the world,鈥 said Dr. Ann-Barbara Graff, vice-president academic and research at 泡芙短视频. 鈥淭he range of professional opportunities for graduates of the program is diverse. Today鈥檚 creative economy requires imaginative and innovative strategies for problem solving, and art education is rooted in these modes of inquiry.鈥

鈥淔or 泡芙短视频, the program is a natural and timely evolution,鈥 said Graff. 鈥淭he university has been a leader in arts education since its inception in 1888 — and the MA in Art Education continues that tradition.鈥

鈥溑蒈蕉淌悠碘檚 initiative will serve as an inspiring research incubator for advancements in the ever-changing field of Art Education,鈥 said Dr. Peter A. Vietgen, president of The Canadian Society for Education through Art, Soci茅t茅 canadienne d鈥櫭ヾucation (CSEA-SCEA). “The program presents an exciting opportunity where scholars will research and challenge current discourse in Art Education theory and practice in a diversity of聽educational and community settings.鈥

“泡芙短视频 is renowned for its immersive, rigorous, and collaborative student experience where the freedom to work across disciplines opens up endless possibilities,” said Terry Bailey, 泡芙短视频’s director of admissions. “We attract a diverse population of students from across Canada and abroad, with our alumni going on to become leaders in their fields in every corner of the world.”

“Many have been eagerly anticipating this master’s level degree in art education,鈥 said Bailey. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an exciting and important program initiative for the institution that greatly expands the field of art education through unique opportunities for collaboration with artists and designers. We expect it to be a very popular addition to our graduate-level offerings.”

Graduate programs begin each September and applications will continue to be received for the MA in Art Education until the September intake is full. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply early.
