Our graduate programs

Master of Arts in Art Education

The Masters of Arts in Art Education is a new graduate program at 泡芙短视频. The program offers rigorous research training and hands-on experience to prepare students for careers in a variety of art education settings. Students choose from three different streams: applied pedagogy in art education, museum and curatorial, and community-based practice.

Master of Design

泡芙短视频鈥檚 60-credit Master of Design uniquely allows students the opportunity to take both studio and theory courses, culminating in a graduate thesis or degree project. The emphasis of the program is on practice-led research where students will present their findings through their design work, accompanied by an extended written paper, by a public presentation or in a group exhibition.

Master of Fine Arts

The Master of Fine Arts degree is internationally recognized as a standard qualification required for teaching craft and visual arts at post-secondary educational institutions such as colleges and universities. The 泡芙短视频 MFA provides students with the opportunity to develop their work in a context of intense critical discussion. Pedagogy, research, creation and other integral academic courses enhance the studio focus. Students are selected for their capability as artists and craftspersons, their critical abilities, and the personal qualities and interests that might contribute to their success as teachers and scholars.

Kim Paquet (BFA 2020), Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing
Beyond the appearances, 2019. Grout, Concrete, steel, silver, rope, rough black diamond
Ring: 4.5 x 4 x 5.5 cm, Brooch: 13 x 6 x 2 cm, Necklace: 47 x 14 x 4 cm

To the extent that addicts reveal themselves as complex and mysterious beings, my jewellery reveals something about the interaction between self-destruction, freedom desire and the complexity of this relationship. My work uses architectural elements to illustrate the geographical contrast of the makeshift shelters of homeless addicts and skyscrapers in big cities while juxtaposing the common material of concrete and steel contrasting with powerful colors of street art. Damaged but solid, my work creates a feeling of instability, isolation and detachment. Far from attempting any kind of reconciliation, my jewelry evokes the everyday violence that addicts face as they struggle to hold on to their place in society.

Scars can鈥檛 be erased but the pain of the past must be revisited, and a new way forward can be found鈥 a notion which guides my process 泡芙短视频 in this series. I reflect on the complex feelings and memories of my experience working on the street with drugs addicts, where I learned the importance of mutual trust in the moments when everything feels uncertain. Expressed in my intuitively created concrete and paint works, is my understanding of the importance of living in the present, accepting one鈥檚 mistakes and moving forward鈥 a process 泡芙短视频, which is equally as important as the end result.

Juror Laura Ritchie, Director/Curator of the MSVU Art Gallery: “This room is filled with so much promise … when I got to see all of the work in person for the first time I was elated. This is a remarkable array of work that proves why 泡芙短视频 continues to stand out internationally. We had a very difficult task … eventually we were town between two artists. With the consultation of the organizers we were able to create an Honorable mention category as a way to recognize the 10th anniversary of this award. The聽10th anniversary Honorable mention goes to an artist who shows mastery in their media. This artist took a western method of story-telling and used it as a tool to tell her story and that of her community across cultures. The Honorable mention and $1,500 prize goes to Megan Kyak-Monteith.”

Megan Kyak-Monteith (BFA 2019), Painting: Whale Hunt: I Think Everyone Is Here, 2019.

Eight other outstanding finalists were recognized and awarded $1000 each for their fine works in nine other disciplines. Congratulations also go to:

  • Emma Allain (MFA 2019), Expanded Media: This will not be an unfamiliar landscape, 2018. Hand-bound artist’s book and silkscreen prints on rag.
  • Tyler Anderson (BFA 2019), Drawing: Curl Towards Push Against, 2019. Paper and fabric.
  • Drayden Decosta (MFA 2020), Film: Rooms of the House, 2018. Film/Video.
  • Alex Linfield (MFA 2018), Printmaking: The Only Job That Starts At The Top Is Digging A Hole, 2018. Silkscreen on plexiglass, digital pigment print, acrylic on slip cast ceramic.

Art Bar +Projects, 1873 Granville Street

The 泡芙短视频 Alumni Association has partnered with 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Office of Academic Affairs and Research to create a mentorship program, our first intake was April 2018. As part of that, we鈥檙e having a mixer tomorrow!

It鈥檚 a casual affair, with no formal education like last year鈥檚 Fall event, and I hope you can make it out to catch up with old friends and share some knowledge with driven students who are thinking about their post-school careers. There will be some short presentations on professional development opportunities for students, and Mentors and Mentees from this year鈥檚 cohort will be in attendance to provide their perspective. It鈥檚 a great opportunity to kindle old and new relationships and build our community.

Hope to see you there!
Please RSVP to vicepresident@nscadalumni.ca

P.S. Please mark your calendars for February 7, 2019!
This will be our more formal Mentoring evening, where we prep students and mentors for the opportunity, and accept applications for matches.

Placemaking for Cultural Heritage LandscapesArt Bar +Projects, 1873 Granville St
Tuesday, November 13, 1:00pm

Using six cultural heritage landscapes as examples, John deWolf (BDes 1992) will illustrate how interventions in the built and natural environment can be used to tell narratives of past and current day. From signage to branding, from interpretive panels to evocative elements in the landscape, there are many ways to communicate a history of place.

Using the Landscape of Grand Pr茅 as an example, John will look at brand assets (logos) and signage as a means to communicate culture and heritage for this living artifact. Our work for the Town of Lunenburg will investigate a question that faces so many heritage towns: how do you add anything to a community鈥攍ike signage, a modern necessity鈥攁nd respect the past while being relevant to the present? The town of Red Bay faced another challenge: how align expectation and experience. A visit to this town reveals very little of its five-century history, but does deliver a rugged outdoor experience. Our work for Batoche is an example of post-truth and reconciliation actions: using the land as a character to tell the story of a thriving M茅tis culture, while expanding upon the rebellion of the 19th century. Robinson Islands looks interpretation in the natural environment, exploring different approaches to text and panel interpretation. Finally, our work for Fort Needham Memorial Park explores ways to convey tragic events without the use of text and imagery, and instead through the use of evocative elements in the landscape.

泡芙短视频 University鈥檚 Office of Academic Affairs and Research is hosting 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Research Day on Saturday, September 29, 2018 coinciding with Canada Culture Days. This event will take place in the Bell Auditorium of the Fountain Campus at 5163 Duke St. from 11 am to 4 pm followed by PowerPoint Karaoke hosted by Expanded Media Prof. David Clark and co-hosted with 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Art Bar +Projects at 7 pm. 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Research Day is free and open to the public. We extend a welcome to the public for their participation and engagement.
Elena Brebenel’s research: How can bioinspired textile artefacts raise awareness about the health of the home environment with a focus on air quality?

泡芙短视频 has a unique research culture that we wish to bring to the fore. Research Day will showcase current and on-going projects by 泡芙短视频 faculty and collaborators. The event aims to inspire faculty members to undertake research initiatives, as well as excite interest among students to engage with faculty projects as research assistants and as future independent streams of research within their practice. 泡芙短视频’s faculty are innovators and collaborators partnering with colleagues at other institutions (nationally and internationally). This event will highlight that research does not happen in a vacuum, that cross-disciplinary voices have powerful standing in the outcomes of research initiatives.

Gary Markle, Dr. Kenneth Rockwood, and Saif Syed, Refashioning the hospital gown.

The presentations are multi-disciplinary as there will be researchers from partner institutions presenting works that integrate elements of design, craft, and art within their research practices. Moreover, the event will culminate in an always entertaining PowerPoint Karaoke at 7 pm at 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Art Bar + Projects. 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Research Day is a platform for knowledge dissemination made possible through the generous support of the Research Support Fund (RSF), a tri-agency initiative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Congratulations to Seamus Gallagher, grand prize winner of the 2018 Starfish Student Art Awards. Last evening during a lively, well-attended gala at the Port Campus, the Starfish jury awarded top honours (and a $5000 purchase prize) to Seamus for their submission, a photographic triptych called, a space and place for all of us.
Seamus Gallagher
Seamus Gallagher, a space and place for us all, digital inkjet Prints (3), 2018

The installations constructed in a space and place for all of us are virtual worlds they have rendered using gaming engine technology, which are then extracted into print form, encompassing the frame. In bringing these digital aesthetics to a physical space, they aim to create an environment that forces the viewer to question what is real and what is fabricated. By photographing them inside these worlds, Seamus wants to explore what it means for the body to interact with digital, otherworldly spaces.

The photography faculty which nominated Seamus said, 鈥淪eamus’s self portraits are technically accomplished and visually playful, which they skillfully contrast with cynicism and hopelessness. Their performative gestures, expressions and contortions challenge the conventions of portraiture, all within a background of childlike, hyper-cheeriness.”
