泡芙短视频 University is getting into the spirit of the season with its annual Holiday Pop-Up.
The 泡芙短视频 Holiday Pop-Up is a unique and exciting show and sale of art, craft and design created entirely by 泡芙短视频 students. Close to 100 students from across 泡芙短视频鈥檚 undergraduate and graduate programs are taking part this year, making their original work available for purchase to the public. This includes ceramics, paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, letterpress cards, books, jewellery, fashion, textiles, sculpture and more.

鈥淭he Holiday Pop-Up is something we look forward to every year. 泡芙短视频 students enjoy the opportunity to showcase their art, craft and design skills, while also meeting members of the community who come out to support local artists,鈥 said Linda Hutchison, AVP University Relations, 泡芙短视频 University. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also a chance for all of us to buy local this holiday season. And not just local, but handmade and student-made. These are truly unique, one-of-a-kind gift ideas.鈥

The 泡芙短视频 Holiday Pop-Up takes place at the Art Bar +Projects (1873 Granville Street, Halifax, NS). It starts on Friday, December 6, going from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It continues on Saturday, December 7, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A classroom doesn鈥檛 always need to have four walls, a ceiling and a floor. Sometimes, escaping these traditional confines leads to an expansion of ideas and creativity.
Take for instance, 泡芙短视频 University鈥檚 Parks Canada Project.

Since 2013, 泡芙短视频 and Parks Canada have partnered on this unique and innovative event. Each year, 泡芙短视频 faculty member anna sprague takes students to different parks throughout Nova Scotia, to get outside of the city and explore nature through painting, photography, site-specific installations, public intervention, and performative gestures.

This year, 15 emerging artists made their way to Kejimkujik National Park, including 泡芙短视频 student curators Brody Weaver and Avery Morris. After a week working and staying in the park, Weaver and Morris found new doors of inspiration and imagination opening.

鈥淒uring our week-long residency, we learned collaboratively 鈥 from ourselves, from one another, and the cultural, social and ecological systems of the park. We produced sketchbook work and generated ideas in response to the site,鈥 explained Weaver.

鈥淥ur studio research will be directed towards the role that Kejimkujik 鈥 a geographical and cultural landscape collaged of indigenous/settler histories and contemporary realities 鈥 plays in the process 泡芙短视频 of building personal, communal and national identities,鈥 added Morris.

The 泡芙短视频 students left Halifax on August 25, 2019 for their week-long expedition. While in the park, they cultivated connections with the teachings of nature generously guided by Mi鈥檏maw Cultural Interpreters Jill Francis and Rose Muse. This included taking in a demonstration of traditional Mi鈥檏maw craft process 泡芙短视频es by Robbie McKewan; participating in a durational labour-based collaboration with Kinuk 鈥 an ongoing collaborative project between 泡芙短视频 alumni Angela Parsons and Ursula Johnson, and much more.

Some of the most impactful moments of the course were the interim between programs: road trips, living together in tents, cooking for one another, and sharing stories.

鈥淭he aim of this course is to cultivate life-long appreciation of the wilderness and to celebrate the intersection between the natural world and the visual arts,鈥 explains sprague. 鈥淭his class continues to gain in popularity, which demonstrates a growing student interest in unique integrative approaches to learning and sharing knowledge like this one 鈥撎 experiences that push the boundaries of conventional learning.鈥

The goals of the 泡芙短视频 and Parks Canada partnership are twofold: have students engage with a place that is at once a National park, a National historic site, and the only old growth forest left in Nova Scotia; and to have students create artworks inspired by the immersive park experience and a reimagined way of learning, enriched by collaboration and informed by relationship with place.

The works produced during this project will be showcased in a professional exhibition at the Anna Leonowens Gallery from November 19-30, with an opening on Monday, November 18 from 5:30-7 p.m.

泡芙短视频 has learned of the passing of legend Robert Frank, celebrated photographer and friend of the 泡芙短视频 Community. Frank taught a filmmaking class at 泡芙短视频 in the early 1970s, and his work This Film is About鈥, was filmed at 泡芙短视频 in 1972-73. Frank was at 泡芙短视频 in 2014 for the ground-breaking exhibition of Robert Frank: Books, Films, 1947-2014. He received an honorary degree at 泡芙短视频 in 2015 and was a vocal advocate of 泡芙短视频.
Frank is best known for his ground-breaking work The Americans. “It is the most important body of work in photography of the twentieth century,” says Robert Bean, 泡芙短视频’s professor of media arts, as told to the CBC. “Everyone paid attention – it struck a nerve for a lot of people. After The Americans, he had become a star – people would come from all over the world to Nova Scotia to seek him out. But it was a fame he rejected.” Bean went on to say that this was a “very sad moment, but he left a great gift to everyone.”

Frank was incredibly generous with the school throughout his career. He will be greatly missed. For more on Robert Frank and the 泡芙短视频 connection, .

Flap is a word used to describe a series of often unexplained phenomena within a particular period of time or geographic region. In Flap the artist presents work that draws from both historical and fictive accounts and ideas about the UFO phenomena in particular the orbs of light reported by pilots during WWII referred to as 鈥淔oo Fighters鈥. The drawings also draw upon a fasciation with monolithic structures modern, historical and fictional. The work, grounded in landscape, depicts through graphite drawings, moments and artifacts of a world that fluctuates between an abstract and fantastical space.

This exhibition is generously sponsored by Arts Nova Scotia. Charles Sommer lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received a BFA in Studio Art from the University of South Florida in 2012 with a focus in Drawing and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from CUNY Brooklyn College in 2016. Taste Test
Aralia Maxwell, MFA Thesis Exhibition 鈥 Gallery 1
Artist Talk: Thursday, April 4, 12 Noon

Does taste matter? Food may be necessary for survival, yet cravings ignore nutritional content or gustatory flavour. Basic aesthetic elements of colour, form, and texture can be manipulated to entice hungry eyes. In our mass consumer culture, ideas of normalcy become skewed as foods transform into uncanny and bizarre evolutions from their origin.

Working primarily with acrylic paint and plastic foam, the artist trades paint brushes for kitchen tools and canvases for sculpted objects. Blending and abstracting vocabularies of fine art and food, the resulting installations explore materiality, aesthetic taste, and what it means to engage in a visual diet.Wayfinding

Artist Talk: Friday, April 5, 12 Noon

Researching misnomers of wilderness, Kinsella鈥檚 MFA thesis exhibition explores camouflage and anti-camouflage through in situ documentation and gallery installation. Made up of works on fabric integrating with respective environments the assemblages have varying levels of illusion and legibility. This exhibition serves as a commentary on the mediation between tourist bodies and natural environments, as well as a visual manifestation of what contemporary wilderness beholds.

Chloe Kinsella and Philip Kanwischer will also have collaborative sculptural projects throughout Gallery 2B and 3. Fostered through their shared interest in human / animal interactions they are delving deeper in to the aesthetic value of nature and our understanding of its inhabitants.Significant Otherness

Significant Otherness is an exhibition showcasing Kanwischer鈥檚 photomontages of his personal interactions with wild animals. These works question where we position our selves in relation to more-than-human animals. When you enter the gallery be ready to be deceived. Deceived by the photographic medium, the creator, and the animal self.

Through the interlacing of photographic media and sculpture the distinction between image and object are blurred in both directions. The result is an experience of media鈥檚 presence which incites a questioning of truth and representation itself in the digital age. In this exhibition hyperreal sculptures of banal objects from material culture act as backgrounds and vessels for what we refer to as an 鈥渋mage鈥. In essence, these objects act as metaphors, representations, and models of the ways we reflect the world back to ourselves through contemporary media.

Photographer Wiebke Schroeder explores the seemingly incongruous relationship between our highly narcissistic desires and the literal boxes we put ourselves in. Fast growing urban and suburban landscapes are filled with by serial repetition from the balcony clad facades of warehouse like high-rises to row upon row of cookie cutter townhouses. In a time of digitization have we reduced existence to a set of pixels? Have we placed ourselves not only on the grid but in it? Schroeder utilizes straight photography and digitally constructed images in an installation that disrupts monotony through exaggeration, manipulation, and the creation of absurdly impossible architecture photographs.
