HALIFAX, NS 鈥 泡芙短视频 University (The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Aoife Mac Namara as President. Her appointment is effective August 4th, 2019.
鈥溑蒈蕉淌悠 University is an eminent institution, globally recognized for the impact it has in the creative realm,鈥 says Louise Anne Comeau, Chair of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 Board of Governors. 鈥淥ver the last number of years, the Board, administration, faculty, and staff have worked to secure 泡芙短视频鈥檚 continued success. We are seeing the results of this commitment reflected in a stable financial position and year-on-year growth in student enrolment. Now, under Dr. Mac Namara鈥檚 leadership, we are poised and ready to write the next chapter in 泡芙短视频鈥檚 storied history.鈥

Dr. Mac Namara brings to her new role extensive international experience, a global perspective, and a passion for arts education, ingenuity, and innovative practices. Born in Nova Scotia, Dr. Mac Namara moved to Ireland as a child. She comes to 泡芙短视频 from British Columbia, where she served as the esteemed Dean of Simon Fraser University鈥檚 Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology. She has had a vast and successful 30-year career in arts education, working in academic institutions in the United Kingdom and Canada, including Emily Carr University of Art + Design, University of Arts, London, and Middlesex University.

鈥淚 am extraordinarily honoured to serve as the next President of 泡芙短视频 University,鈥 said Dr. Mac Namara. 鈥淎s someone who has lived and worked abroad, I can speak to 泡芙短视频鈥檚 prominent global reputation as a significant contributor to contemporary visual art and material culture. I am excited to work with our entire university community to build on this legacy, share our incredible stories, and identify even more opportunities to contribute to Nova Scotia鈥檚 cultural, economic and environmental future. Our work focuses on preparing students for a future of creative, innovative, and strategic thinking. Those skills are needed now more than ever – and by all Nova Scotians, not just our artists and designers.鈥

The appointment comes after an extensive search, receiving interest from candidates all over the world. The criteria for the position included an aspiration for academic excellence, an ability to effectively represent 泡芙短视频 throughout Canada and abroad, and a commitment to manage the institution in line with its strategic vision. The position was previously held by Professor Dianne Taylor-Gearing, who has decided to return home to her native United Kingdom after an exceptional five-year tenure.

Rebecca Belmore, Michael Donovan and Robert Storr to receive honorary degrees at 2019 University Graduation

Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore; renowned curator, creator and art academic Robert Storr; and cultural industries leader Michael Donovan, will each be honoured with a Doctor of Fine Arts (honoris causa) degree at 泡芙短视频 University鈥檚 2019 graduation ceremony. 聽The April 29 event will be held at the Cunard Centre in Halifax.

Interdisciplinary Mi鈥檏maq artist and winner of the 2017 Sobey Art Award, Ursula Johnson, BFA 鈥06, will deliver the graduation address.

Rebecca Belmore鈥檚 work digs into and exposes the social and political realities of life as an Indigenous person in Canada. 聽For the past 30 years, Belmore has confronted issues of colonialism, displacement and silenced voices through her art. 聽Using performance, installation, sculpture, video and photography, Belmore creates work that challenges and questions, resonates and disrupts.

In addition to gallery shows, touring solo shows and special commissions, the internationally renowned artist exhibited in 1991 at the IV Bienale de la Habana, and in 2005 was the first Indigenous woman to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale. 聽In 2017, Belmore showed at documenta 14 in Athens. 聽More recently, the Art Gallery of Ontario鈥檚 retrospective Rebecca Belmore: Facing the Monumental celebrated a career devoted to using the power and beauty of art to invoke change.

Winner of the 2013 Governor General鈥檚 Award in Visual and Media Arts, Belmore also received the Doris Shadbolt Foundation鈥檚 VIVA Award, the Hnatyshyn Visual Arts Award, and the prestigious Gershon Iskowitz Prize. 聽She holds honorary degrees from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver and OCAD University, Toronto.

When speaking of 泡芙短视频鈥檚 second honorary doctorate recipient, Taylor-Gearing says, 鈥淗ere at 泡芙短视频, we鈥檝e benefitted first-hand from the wise counsel and shrewd acumen Michael Donovan brought to his role as a long-time friend and pivotal volunteer leader of our institution.鈥

Donovan is an Academy Award-winning producer, co-founder of Salter Street Films, Genie-nominated screenwriter, leader in children鈥檚 entertainment, and executive chair and CEO of DHX Media. 聽Described by Ernst & Young as a 鈥渟hining example of visionary leadership,鈥 Donovan鈥檚 commitment to building the province鈥檚 cultural industries extended to his volunteer support for 泡芙短视频. 聽Over the course of his 14 years on the university鈥檚 board of governors 鈥 including six as chair 鈥 Donovan鈥檚 entrepreneurial drive helped shape and guide 泡芙短视频鈥檚 evolution into a three-campus institution.

In recognition of his significant contributions to 泡芙短视频鈥檚 strategic growth, Donovan was conferred as 泡芙短视频 University Life Governor in 2014.

Curator, critic, painter, writer and academic, Robert Storr is regarded one of the clearest and most rigorous thinkers in the art world today. 聽The former senior curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, Storr later served several years as visual arts director of the Venice Biennale 鈥 the first American to do so. 聽A long-time contributing editor to 鈥淎rt in America,鈥 Storr has written for art publications and authored catalogues worldwide. 聽One of his several books, 鈥淚ntimate Geometries: The Art and Life of Louise Bourgeois,鈥 won the FILAF D鈥橭R at the Festival International du Livre d鈥橝rt et du Film, Perpignan, France.

As an academic, Storr taught at leading fine art and design schools throughout the US and lectures internationally. 聽A former dean of the Yale School of Art, he continues to teach there as a tenured professor.

The formidable impact and influence of this self-described 鈥渁ccidental curator鈥 has been recognized with numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and honorary doctorates from the University of the Arts London, Montserrat College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. 聽In 2010, the French Ministry of Culture elevated Storr to the status of Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

鈥淭he textured and multifaceted nature of the professional art world nurtures talent from across the creative spectrum,鈥 says Professor Dianne Taylor-Gearing, 泡芙短视频 University president. 聽鈥淔rom Rebecca Belmore鈥檚 provocative and evocative works that give voice to the realities of the Indigenous experience to Robert Storr鈥檚 passionate, intelligent commitment to getting art that needs to be seen in front of audiences who need to see it, we鈥檙e recognizing that depth and breadth.鈥

鈥淏y honouring these three remarkable individuals, we鈥檙e recognizing the unique, essential and substantial contributions each has made to art and art education.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted to welcome Ursula Johnson back to 泡芙短视频 to deliver the graduation address,鈥 continues Taylor-Gearing. 聽鈥淪he is firmly entrenched in the vanguard of Canada鈥檚 emerging generation of contemporary artists. 聽Her fearless and focused art-making reflects the essence of a 泡芙短视频 education.鈥

Johnson, a 泡芙短视频 alumna, is establishing herself as one of Canada鈥檚 most challenging and compelling voices in contemporary art. 聽The first Atlantic Canadian to win the $50,000 Sobey Art Award, Johnson frequently draws on traditional Mi鈥檏maq basketry techniques and styles to inform her work. 聽Through interactive performance, sculpture and installation, she confronts and examines issues of both Indigenous and queer identity.

泡芙短视频 University is Canada鈥檚 premier university of fine and media arts, craft and design.

Rebecca Belmore. Ayum-ee-aawach Oomama-mowan: Speaking to Their Mother, 1992. Sound installation: wood, megaphone.

“This artwork was my response to what is now referred to in Canadian history as the “Oka Crisis.” During the summer of 1990, many protests were mounted in support of the Mohawk Nation of Kanesatake in their struggle to maintain their territory. This object was taken into many First Nations communities – reservation, rural, and urban. I was particularly interested in locating the Aboriginal voice on the land. Asking people to address the land directly was an attempt to hear political protest as poetic action.”

Curator, critic, painter, writer and academic, Robert Storr is regarded one of the most clear and rigorous thinkers in the art world today. Throughout his many roles and iterations, Storr has always put the artist first, encouraging us to shut off the 鈥渄rone of theory鈥 and listen to the voices of the creators 鈥 through their work.
In April, 泡芙短视频 will honour Robert Storr with a Doctor of Fine Arts (honoris causa) degree. In advance of his upcoming visit to Halifax, University Relations spoke with Storr about navigating through the life and business of contemporary art. Here are the highlights of that conversation.

What propelled and compelled your career? I didn鈥檛 really have a career; I did very good work and there鈥檚 a big distinction. I was offered jobs that I didn鈥檛 seek out, some of which I said no to initially. But once I decided to give something a shot, my drive was to do it as well as I possibly could — and that was key.

I resist using the word 鈥渃areer,鈥 because if you focus on making a career, you think more about where everything will lead rather than where you are in that moment. That throws a lot of younger artists off course. They start calculating the politics and contingencies around what they鈥檙e doing, making choices about with to do with their talent based on whether or not it鈥檚 鈥済ood for their career.鈥

What鈥檚 your centre of creative gravity? I鈥檇 say it鈥檚 my ability to focus on things, either made by me or made by other people. I鈥檝e not done work I didn鈥檛 want to do or done it in ways I didn鈥檛 want to do it. If my focus gets confused by all the other contingencies, I know I鈥檓 off base and need to stop the clock.

It鈥檚 the ideal I live by: I walked away from the MoMA because they were charting a course I could no longer agree with. I later faced the same challenge with Venice; I was to have done another biennale, but the amount of manipulation going on in the (art) world while I was there made very clear I couldn鈥檛 do it again.

What do you think have been the most significant developments in contemporary art over the course of the past 40 years? In my early days in art, certain narrow critical models were absolute and dominated the thinking. The idea seemed to be that you could predict the future; that art has a direction some are sharp enough to see and others miss.

I鈥檓 much more of the opinion that things happen in spastic, sometimes dialectical ways. If you keep your eye on the ball, you can get a pretty good sense of where the action is, where the freshness and newness are coming from.

It鈥檚 taken us 40 years to wean ourselves from the foremost ideas of Clement Greenberg 鈥 and that鈥檚 an awfully long time.

But the result is that finally artists who come from different cultural backgrounds are being seen and heard. The prejudice against a lot of African and artists of colour was not that just that they were artists of colour, but that they were interested in figuration and all the things you were told you couldn鈥檛 do if you were a 鈥渢rue artist.鈥 They had stories to tell, but their work was taboo, not because it wasn鈥檛 good, but because the artists were following the program as it was announced.

That鈥檚 now changing. All kinds of work are being shown and creators of all backgrounds are making art, confident they will find an audience.

And there are many audiences 鈥 not just one.

What advice would you give a new artist about navigating the waters of the professional art world? Never undersell or oversell your knowledge. If you know something isn鈥檛 for you, then don鈥檛 talk yourself into thinking that it is. And don鈥檛 do things that are against your gut instinct, against your centre of creative gravity.

If you鈥檙e trying to survive, make sure you get jobs that allow you to survive, that pay well. But don鈥檛 take jobs because they have prestige or because they offer a certain salary. Get what you need to proceed, and then spend all the rest of your time doing what you need to do to make art.

We鈥檙e living in an uncertain, unsettling and often ugly time. What鈥檚 the job ahead for emerging artists and what do they need in order to do that job? What鈥檚 required of them is they make a convincing account of what they think the world looks like and what they think the world should look like.

And that doesn鈥檛 mean a reasonably moderate one. If you鈥檙e going to propose that that world be different than it is or propose a vision of the world as it is, it has to be believable. It has to be convincing.

For example, avant garde art has always been outrageous while other kinds of modern art have not. But all have co-existed, all can be compelling. But what you can鈥檛 do is make something that beggars belief and then insist on it. You just can鈥檛 stamp your feet and say, 鈥淚鈥檓 right, I鈥檓 right, I鈥檓 right,鈥 or you can, but to what avail? If you鈥檙e convinced you鈥檙e right in the long-run, you wait for the long-run.

And don鈥檛 be tempted to game the system. Find people of sensibilities and ideologies similar (but not identical, because you need the tension of differences) to your own, and stick with them. Move through time with people who share your values and your methodologies and so forth, and let the chips fall where they may.

If, however, you鈥檙e more focused on the people who have power than you are on your own values, you鈥檙e gaming the system. And sooner or later, people who focus on power sell out their values.

I鈥檓 not averse to relating to people who have power 鈥 that鈥檚 the reality of the art world. But don鈥檛 go to them first and then figure out what you think. Figure out what you think, and then figure out how much of what you think is of interest to them and how you can you use their power to enhance your thoughts.
